Marriage Registration in Outer North Delhi District

Quick answer

Outer North Delhi was created on 1 January 2026 with three sub-divisions: Narela, Bawana and Mundka. Couples who married or live in these areas, including Delhi's urban villages, apply on e-District to the sub-division shown for their locality and attend with two witnesses. Village weddings at home are registered like any other, using the priest's certificate and photos as proof.

Outer North Delhi covers the city’s northern and north-western edge: Narela, Bawana, Mundka and the many urban villages around them, alongside industrial areas and new housing. Weddings here are often held at home or in village chaupals and community spaces, and families sometimes have fewer formal documents than in central Delhi. Since 1 January 2026, these areas form a district of their own. This guide explains how to register a marriage in Outer North Delhi and how to handle the document gaps that are common here.

Outer North Delhi after the 2026 reorganisation

Delhi’s revenue districts were reorganised from 11 to 13 with effect from 1 January 2026. Shahdara district was dissolved, three new districts (Old Delhi, Central North and Outer North) were created, and the number of sub-divisions rose from 33 to 39. Outer North is one of the three new districts, created mainly from the outer parts of the former North and North West districts.

Outer North Delhi now has 3 sub-divisions:

Sub-divisionCovers
NarelaThe Narela area and surrounding localities
BawanaThe Bawana area and surrounding localities
MundkaThe Mundka area and surrounding localities

Sub-division boundaries do not always follow the colony names people use every day. Village boundaries and newer colonies can be confusing, especially near the Haryana border. Always confirm the jurisdiction e-District shows for your exact locality before you apply.

Which office should you apply to?

You can usually apply to the SDM office that covers either the place where your marriage was solemnised or the place where either spouse lives, shown by address proof. If you married in a village across the Haryana border but live in Narela, you can register in Delhi based on residence where your route allows it. If neither the wedding nor your home is in Delhi, Haryana’s process applies instead.

Step by step in Outer North Delhi

  1. Check documents for both spouses: identity, date-of-birth and address proof, with names and dates matching across all of them.
  2. Collect proof of the ceremony: the priest’s certificate, photographs of the ceremony at home or the venue, and the invitation card if one was printed.
  3. Prepare two affidavits on e-stamp paper and have them notarised. Notaries and e-stamp vendors work around the Rohini court complex and in larger local markets.
  4. Apply on e-District, selecting Outer North Delhi district and the sub-division shown for your locality, and pay the fee.
  5. Book an appointment that both spouses and both witnesses can definitely attend.
  6. Deliver original affidavits to the SDM office if your sub-division asks for them for online applications.
  7. Attend with originals, both spouses and two witnesses.
  8. Download the certificate from e-District after approval, and check every detail.

Village and home weddings

A wedding at home or in the village is just as valid as one in a banquet hall. For registration you need to show that it took place:

  • a signed certificate from the priest who performed the ceremony, with names and date;
  • photographs of both of you during the main rituals;
  • the invitation card, if there was one;
  • witnesses who attended.

If the priest cannot be traced, a joint affidavit and witnesses who attended carry more weight. See marriage registration without a wedding card.

When age proof is the problem

In some families, birth certificates were never issued. Alternatives include the Class 10 certificate, a passport, or Aadhaar with a full date of birth. If none exists, speak to the office about acceptable evidence before applying. Remember that both spouses must have met the legal age, 21 for the groom and 18 for the bride, on the wedding date. See marriage registration without a birth certificate.

Court marriage in Outer North Delhi

For a court marriage under the Special Marriage Act, at least one partner must have lived in the district for 30 days before giving notice. The notice is displayed for 30 days, during which objections can be raised. If none is upheld, you marry before the marriage officer with three witnesses and receive the certificate. See court marriage in Delhi.

Practical tips for Outer North Delhi

  • Distance: sub-division offices can be far from some villages; plan travel and keep the appointment time in mind.
  • Documents first: gaps in age or address proof are the main cause of delay here; sort them out before booking.
  • Witnesses: village elders or neighbours who attended the wedding are ideal, provided they have identity and Delhi address proof.
  • Haryana border: confirm whether the venue and your home are in Delhi.

What to bring on the day

  • Originals and two self-attested copies of identity, age and address proof for both spouses
  • Both notarised affidavits on e-stamp paper
  • Proof of the ceremony and passport-size photographs
  • The e-District acknowledgement and fee receipt
  • Two witnesses, each with original identity and Delhi address proof and copies

At the appointment, the officer checks originals against your uploads, confirms that both spouses and both witnesses are present, and may ask a few simple questions about the wedding. If the file is complete, approval often follows on the day or shortly after.

After you receive the certificate

Download the certificate from e-District and read every line before you file it away. Names, dates of birth, the date and place of marriage and the parents’ names must match your documents exactly; a small error now becomes a real problem later at a passport office, a bank or an embassy. Save the PDF in two places, such as your email and a cloud drive. If the certificate is going abroad, begin state authentication and apostille straight away. If either of you is changing your surname, the certificate is the anchor document for updating your passport, Aadhaar, PAN and bank records. See name change after marriage in India.

Mistakes we see in Outer North Delhi files

  • No proof of date of birth, or a year of birth only.
  • Wedding photos that do not clearly show both spouses.
  • Applying in Delhi when both the venue and the home are in Haryana.
  • Choosing North West district for an address now in Outer North.

Worked example: home wedding in a Narela village

Deepak and Sunita marry at Deepak’s family home in a village near Narela. The family priest gives a signed certificate, and a cousin’s phone photos show the pheras. They apply in the Narela sub-division with Aadhaar and Class 10 certificates as age proof, and attend with Deepak’s uncle and a neighbour as witnesses.

Worked example: missing birth certificate

Pinki has no birth certificate, and her Aadhaar shows only a year of birth. She uses her Class 10 certificate, which shows her full date of birth, as age proof, and the registration in Bawana goes through normally.

Key terms explained
