“How much does it cost to register a marriage in Delhi?” sounds like a question with one answer. Search for it, though, and you will find figures from ₹15 to ₹1,000 for the same thing, and Tatkal fees ranging from a few hundred rupees to ₹10,000. This guide cuts through the confusion. It sets out what Delhi’s official order says, what district offices have published, why the numbers you see online conflict, how to find the fee that actually applies to you, and what else you should budget for.

What the Delhi 2014 Order says
The Delhi (Compulsory Registration of Marriage) Order, 2014 is the clearest official source on fees for registration under that Order:
- Order 4 requires the couple to apply within 60 days of the wedding with the required proofs and a fee of ₹200.
- Order 6 allows the marriage officer to condone a further delay of up to 60 days on an additional fee of ₹500.
- Order 7 allows a penalty of ₹1,000 if the marriage is not registered within the extended period, which the ADM or DM may remit wholly or partly for reasonable cause.
- Order 10 creates Tatkal on payment of an additional fee of ₹10,000.
Fees under the Hindu Marriage Act and Special Marriage Act
Registrations under these Acts follow their own rules:
- A Delhi district page has listed ₹100 for registration under the Hindu Marriage Act, deposited with the marriage clerk.
- Published reports have put the Special Marriage Act registration fee at about ₹150, with additional amounts for components such as solemnisation outside the office.
These figures come from district pages and reports rather than a single consolidated fee notification you can easily read online, so confirm them on e-District.
Why fees online conflict
You will see very different figures on different websites. The reasons are worth knowing, because they tell you which figures to trust:
- Old figures. The Delhi Revenue Department’s own FAQ page has mentioned a fee of ₹15 deposited with the district cashier, from an earlier fee regime.
- Copied tables. Many pages copy fee tables from each other without checking a primary source, so errors spread.
- Mixed Acts. Pages mix fees for the Hindu Marriage Act, the Special Marriage Act and the 2014 Order.
- Other states. Some pages quote Tatkal or registration fees from Mumbai, Uttarakhand or elsewhere.
- Service charges included. Agents and some websites quote “fees” that include their own charges.
- Proposals reported as decisions. News reports have discussed proposals to change the Tatkal fee; a proposal is not a notified change.
The e-District payment screen resolves all of this for your specific application.
How to check the fee yourself
- Log in to e-District and start the marriage registration application.
- Choose the Act and district, and Tatkal if you want it.
- Proceed to the payment step and note the amounts shown.
- If anything looks wrong, stop and ask the SDM office before paying.
Late fees and penalties in practice
If you married in Delhi and apply:
| When you apply | What applies under the 2014 Order |
|---|---|
| Within 60 days | Normal fee |
| Day 61 to day 120 | Normal fee + ₹500 |
| After day 120 | Normal fee + penalty of up to ₹1,000, which may be remitted for reasonable cause |
See late marriage registration in Delhi and penalty waiver.
Tatkal
Tatkal costs an additional ₹10,000 under the 2014 Order. It prioritises your application but does not relax any requirement, and it cannot shorten the Special Marriage Act notice. See Tatkal fee.
Incidental costs
Beyond government fees, budget for:
| Item | Typical range |
|---|---|
| E-stamp paper for two affidavits | Small (district guidelines refer to ₹10 each) |
| Notarisation of two affidavits | A few hundred rupees in total, varying by notary |
| Passport-size photographs | A few hundred rupees |
| Photocopies and printing | Small |
| Certified copy of a divorce decree | Court copying fee, varies |
| Travel for both spouses and two witnesses | Depends on distance |
| Time off work | One day for four people, more if rescheduled |
See the real total cost of marriage registration.
After registration: apostille costs
If you will use the certificate abroad, the Ministry of External Affairs lists an apostille fee of ₹50 per document, and its outsourced agencies charge ₹90 per document plus ₹3 per page for scanning. State-level authentication comes first. See apostille for a Delhi marriage certificate.
Professional fees
You do not have to pay anyone beyond the government. If you use help, fees vary widely. Marketplace listings for lawyer assistance on court marriage and registration in India quote about ₹5,000 to ₹25,000 depending on complexity, and a legal-services platform lists a marriage registration package at ₹9,999.
WedProof’s packages are fixed-price, with government fees shown separately at cost:
| Package | Price |
|---|---|
| Essential Registration (Hindu Marriage Act or 2014 Order) | ₹5,999 |
| Court Marriage (Special Marriage Act) | ₹9,999 |
| Tatkal Assist | ₹7,999 + Tatkal government fee |
| NRI and Apostille | From ₹14,999 |
How to avoid overpaying
- Pay government fees only on e-District and keep receipts.
- Ask any helper for a written breakdown separating government fees from service fees.
- Refuse cash “speed money”; the only official fast lane is Tatkal.
- Be wary of anyone quoting a “government fee” that differs from e-District.
See marriage registration agents: charges and red flags.
Fees compared with what a mistake costs
The government fees are modest. What costs couples real money is a mistake that leads to a rejected application: the fee may be lost, and four people may need another day off. For a Special Marriage Act marriage, a lapsed notice costs a month. Spending a little time or money on a document check usually saves more than it costs.
Worked example: on-time registration
Ishita and Dev married in Delhi in March and apply under the 2014 Order within 30 days. They pay the application fee shown on e-District, buy two e-stamp certificates and pay a notary for two affidavits. Their total outlay is the government fee plus a few hundred rupees in incidentals and their travel.
Worked example: late and urgent
Aamir and Sara married in Delhi five months ago and now need the certificate within a week for a visa. They are past 120 days, so the penalty may apply, and they choose Tatkal. They apply to the ADM for remission of the penalty, explaining that Aamir was posted outside India after the wedding, and pay the normal fee plus the Tatkal fee. The penalty is partly remitted.
Fee questions we hear most
Is there GST on government fees? Government registration fees are not charged GST in the way services are. Professional service fees, such as a lawyer’s or a service company’s, may carry GST.
Do witnesses pay anything? No. Witnesses do not pay any fee.
Is the certificate download free? Downloading the approved certificate from e-District is part of the service. Certified copies or duplicates later have their own fees.
Do fees differ by religion? Fees differ by the law under which you register, not by religion as such.
Fees by route, side by side
| Route | Government fee | Typical time | Visits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hindu Marriage Act registration | ₹100 (as published by DM South; confirm on e-District) | Next appointment | Usually one |
| Delhi 2014 Order registration | ₹200 | Next appointment | Usually one |
| Tatkal (2014 Order) | ₹200 + ₹10,000 | About one working day | One |
| Court marriage (Special Marriage Act) | Small; reported around ₹150 in total | At least 30 days after notice | Usually two |
| Registration of an existing marriage under the Special Marriage Act | Small; check e-District | At least 30 days after notice | Usually two |
Fees for old marriages
If you are registering a marriage solemnised in Delhi long ago, the 2014 Order’s late provisions apply: an additional ₹500 between days 61 and 120, and after that a penalty of up to ₹1,000, which the ADM or DM can remit wholly or partly for reasonable cause. For a marriage from 1995 or 2010, that is still the ceiling under the Order; there is no year-by-year accumulation. See can the late registration penalty be waived?.
Fees in Noida, Ghaziabad, Gurugram and Faridabad
Couples in the NCR often compare Delhi with neighbouring states:
| Place | Law and portal | Fee position |
|---|---|---|
| Noida, Greater Noida, Ghaziabad | Uttar Pradesh rules, IGRS UP portal | Nominal; small extra amounts for late registration |
| Gurugram, Faridabad | Haryana Compulsory Registration of Marriages Act, 2008 | Fees set by the rules; late filing needs permission and a fine |
| Delhi | 2014 Order and HMA on e-District | ₹100–₹200; late fee and penalty; Tatkal available |
If your wedding was in Delhi, you can usually register in Delhi even if you live in the NCR, and Delhi is the only one of these with the ₹10,000 Tatkal option. See marriage registration in Noida and Gurugram.
Paying safely
- Pay government fees on e-District at the payment step, by the methods it offers.
- Download and save the receipt immediately; you will need it at the appointment.
- If someone else pays for you, make sure the receipt is in your application’s name and number.
- Never pay a “government fee” in cash to an individual without an official receipt.
Refunds and failed payments
If a payment fails but money leaves your account, do not pay again immediately. Check the application status on e-District; many failed transactions are reversed automatically by the bank within days. If the application shows unpaid and no reversal arrives, contact the portal helpdesk with the transaction reference. Government fees for an application that is later rejected are not usually refunded, which is one more reason to get the file right first time.
Fees after registration
