Age Proof for Marriage Registration: What Is Accepted

Quick answer

Delhi accepts several documents as date of birth proof for marriage registration, including the birth certificate, Class 10 certificate from a recognised board, passport, Aadhaar with full date of birth and driving licence. The birth certificate, Class 10 certificate and passport are the strongest. Whatever you use, the date must match your affidavit and show the groom was 21 and the bride 18 on the wedding date.

Age is one of the few facts that can stop a marriage registration outright. The marriage officer must be satisfied that the groom was at least 21 and the bride at least 18 on the wedding date, and the only way to show that is a reliable date of birth proof. This guide lists the age proofs accepted in Delhi, ranks them by strength, and explains what to do when your documents disagree or when the usual proof is missing.

Why age proof matters so much

The legal minimum ages for marriage in India are 21 for men and 18 for women. A marriage involving a person below these ages is a child marriage under the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006, and the marriage officer cannot register it. So the officer looks closely at your date of birth and checks it against the wedding date. See legal age for marriage in India.

Age proofs accepted in Delhi

Delhi district guidelines list a range of date of birth proofs. Commonly accepted are:

DocumentStrengthNotes
Birth certificateStrongIssued by the municipal or civil registration authority
Class 10 (matriculation) certificateStrongFrom a board recognised by the Government of India
PassportStrongShows full date of birth
Aadhaar with full date of birthModerateWeaker if only the year is shown or the date was self-declared
Driving licenceModerateShows date of birth
School leaving certificateModerateFrom a recognised school
Hospital or vaccination recordSupportingOlder records may be hard to verify
Doctor’s certificate of ageLast resortWhere no documentary proof exists

Use the strongest proof you have as your primary document.

Matching your age proof to everything else

The date of birth on your age proof should match:

  • the date in your affidavit;
  • the date entered in the online application;
  • the date on your other identity documents, where shown.

If they all match, age is rarely questioned. If they do not, sort it out before applying.

When your documents show different dates of birth

This is common, especially with Aadhaar, where some dates were entered without strong proof. Options:

  1. Correct the weaker document. Update Aadhaar using your birth certificate or Class 10 certificate, for example.
  2. Use the stronger document as primary proof, and enter that date everywhere in the application.
  3. Explain the difference in your affidavit, for example: “My date of birth is [date] as per my Class 10 certificate. My Aadhaar card shows [other date], which is an error.”

Never choose whichever date is more convenient. The date must be your true date of birth.

If you have no birth certificate or Class 10 certificate

Many older applicants, and some people who did not complete school, have neither. Alternatives:

  • Passport, if you have one.
  • Aadhaar showing full date of birth.
  • Driving licence.
  • School leaving certificate from any school attended.
  • Late registration of birth with the municipal body, which can take time.
  • A doctor’s age certificate as a last resort.

See marriage registration without a birth certificate.

Age proof for foreign national spouses

A valid passport showing the full date of birth is the standard age proof for a foreign spouse. If the passport is in a non-Latin script or a language other than English, carry a translation of the relevant page.

Calculating age on the wedding date

The officer checks age on the date of the wedding, not on the date of registration. For example, a bride born on 15 March 2008 turns 18 on 15 March 2026. A wedding on 10 March 2026 would be below the legal age, even if registration happens later in the year. Couples sometimes get this wrong when registering months after the wedding.

How to correct a date of birth in Aadhaar before applying

If Aadhaar is the document showing the wrong date, it can usually be corrected through the UIDAI update process using a valid date of birth proof such as a birth certificate or Class 10 certificate. Corrections to date of birth in Aadhaar are limited in number and may need verification, so start early. If the correction will not be complete before your registration, use the stronger document as primary proof and explain the discrepancy in your affidavit rather than waiting.

Age proof and old marriages

When registering a marriage that took place years ago, the officer still checks age on the wedding date. Older applicants are more likely to lack a birth certificate or school certificate, and more likely to have documents with placeholder dates. Gather the best proof available, and if documents disagree, explain the discrepancy honestly in the affidavit. Supporting documents, such as an old passport, a service record or a driving licence issued many years ago, can help show the date of birth was not changed recently. See registering an old marriage.

Common mistakes

  • Using Aadhaar with only a year of birth.
  • Entering a date in the application that differs from the age proof.
  • Not noticing that the bride turned 18 only after the wedding date.
  • Bringing a photocopy without the original.
  • Using a document from an unrecognised school or board.

Worked example: mismatched dates

Ankita’s birth certificate gives 2 August 1999; her Aadhaar says 1 January 1999, a common placeholder date. She uses the birth certificate as her age proof, enters 2 August 1999 in the application and her affidavit, and adds a line explaining the Aadhaar error. The officer accepts the birth certificate as primary proof.

Worked example: no school certificate

Ramesh, 54, is registering a marriage from 1996. He has no birth certificate or school certificate, but he has a passport issued in 2010 showing his date of birth. He uses the passport as age proof, and the officer is satisfied that he was over 21 at the time of the wedding.

Quick decision guide

  • Have a birth certificate or Class 10 certificate? Use it as primary age proof.
  • Have only a passport? Use the passport.
  • Have only Aadhaar with a full date of birth? Use it, and carry any supporting document you have.
  • Documents disagree? Use the strongest one everywhere and explain the difference in your affidavit.

Key terms explained

  • Date of birth proof: a document showing your full date of birth.
  • Recognised board: an education board recognised by the Government of India.
  • Placeholder date: a default date, often 1 January, entered when the exact date was unknown.
  • Child marriage: a marriage where the man is under 21 or the woman under 18.

Frequently asked questions

Is Aadhaar accepted as age proof for marriage registration in Delhi?

Delhi guidelines list Aadhaar among date of birth proofs. Where Aadhaar shows only the year of birth, or the date was self-declared, a birth certificate, Class 10 certificate or passport is stronger.

My Aadhaar and Class 10 certificate show different dates of birth. What should I do?

Decide which is correct, usually the Class 10 certificate or birth certificate, and correct the other where possible. If not possible in time, explain the difference in your affidavit and use the stronger document as primary proof.

Can I use a PAN card as age proof?

PAN shows date of birth, but Delhi guidelines focus on the documents listed above. Use PAN as supporting identity proof rather than primary age proof.

What if I never studied to Class 10?

Use your birth certificate, passport, Aadhaar with full date of birth, driving licence or another accepted proof. A doctor's age certificate is listed in some guidelines as a last resort.

Does the age proof need to be attested?

Carry the original and self-attested copies. Follow your district's guidelines on any further attestation.

Can an affidavit alone prove my age?

No. The affidavit states your date of birth, but the officer needs a document proving it.

What if the bride was 17 at the wedding?

The marriage cannot be registered. Under the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act it is voidable at the option of the person who was a child. Take legal advice.

What if the age difference between spouses is large?

There is no legal limit on age difference. The legal question is only whether each spouse met the minimum age.

Do witnesses need age proof?

Witnesses must be adults; their identity proof usually shows this. Separate age proof is not normally required.

Is a foreign spouse's passport enough as age proof?

Yes. A valid passport showing the full date of birth is strong age proof.
