Marriage Registration Without a Birth Certificate

Quick answer

You do not need a birth certificate to register a marriage in Delhi. Delhi guidelines accept other date of birth proofs, including the Class 10 certificate from a recognised board, passport, Aadhaar with full date of birth, driving licence and school certificates. Use the strongest one you have, and make sure the date matches your affidavit and shows you met the minimum age on the wedding date.

Birth certificate required?
No; other date of birth proofs are accepted
Strong alternatives
Class 10 certificate, passport
Other options

Many adults in India do not have a birth certificate. Births in earlier decades were not always registered, records were lost, or certificates were never collected. If that is you, do not worry: a birth certificate is not essential for marriage registration in Delhi. The marriage officer needs a reliable proof of your date of birth, and several documents can provide it. This guide lists the alternatives, ranks them, and explains what to do if none of the usual documents is available.

What the officer needs

The officer must be satisfied that, on the date of the wedding, the groom was at least 21 and the bride at least 18. For that, you need a document that shows your full date of birth and is reasonably reliable. The birth certificate is one such document, but not the only one.

Accepted alternatives in Delhi

Delhi district guidelines list a range of date of birth proofs. In order of strength:

PassportStrongShows full date of birth
Aadhaar with full date of birthModerateWeaker if only the year is shown
Driving licenceModerateShows date of birth

Use the strongest document you have as your primary proof. See age proof for marriage registration.

If you have none of the usual documents

Some applicants, particularly older people or those who did not attend school, may have none of the strong documents. Options:

  1. Aadhaar with a full date of birth. Even if Aadhaar was your first official document, it is listed among accepted proofs.
  2. Driving licence or voter records showing your date of birth or age.
  3. Delayed registration of birth with the municipal body or registrar of births where you were born. This may need supporting documents and can take time.
  4. A doctor’s age certificate, issued after a medical assessment, where district guidelines allow it.

If you are registering an old marriage, also gather documents that support your age over time, such as an old passport or service records.

Making sure the date matches everywhere

Whatever document you use, the date of birth on it must match:

  • your affidavit;
  • the online application;
  • other documents where your date of birth appears.

If documents disagree, use the strongest one consistently and explain the difference in your affidavit. Never choose a convenient date.

Getting a birth certificate later

If you would like a birth certificate for future use, such as passports or school admissions for children, apply to the municipal body that covers the place of your birth. For births in Delhi, this is the relevant municipal corporation’s registration system. Births not registered within the normal period can be registered late, subject to the procedure for delayed registration. You do not need to wait for this to register your marriage.

Foreign national spouses

A foreign spouse normally uses their passport as proof of date of birth. If the passport is in a script other than English, carry a translation of the relevant page.

Worked example: Class 10 certificate instead

Sunil’s birth was never registered. His Class 10 certificate from the CBSE shows his date of birth, which also matches his Aadhaar. He uses the Class 10 certificate as age proof. The officer accepts it without question.

Worked example: no school records

Kamla, registering a marriage from 1990, did not attend school and has no birth certificate. Her Aadhaar shows a full date of birth that matches the age stated in her old voter records. She uses Aadhaar as age proof, with the voter records as support. The officer is satisfied that she was over 18 at the time of the wedding.

Why age proof matters

The minimum ages are legal conditions. Under the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006, a marriage involving a child is prohibited and voidable at the option of the person who was a child. The officer therefore cannot register a marriage without being satisfied about age. See legal age for marriage in India.

When the birth certificate exists but is with someone else

Sometimes a birth certificate exists but is held by parents or relatives who are not available or not supportive. You can apply to the registrar of births for a fresh copy, or simply use another accepted proof. There is no need to delay marriage registration while you try to retrieve the original.

When the birth certificate shows a different name

Birth certificates issued shortly after birth sometimes show no name, a different spelling or a childhood name. If the birth certificate is your only age proof and the name differs from your identity documents, either apply to the registrar to update the name, or use another age proof whose name matches. If you must use it as is, explain the variation in your affidavit, for example: “My name was recorded as [name] in my birth certificate; I am the same person.” See name mismatch in documents.

How district offices treat weaker proofs

Officers know that many applicants lack birth certificates and school records. What they look for is reliability and consistency. A single weaker document, such as Aadhaar with a full date of birth, is usually acceptable if nothing contradicts it. A weaker document that conflicts with another document will prompt questions. If you are relying on a weaker proof, bring any supporting documents you have, such as a voter ID showing your age at an earlier date, so the officer can see that the date is not recent or convenient.

Common mistakes

  • Waiting months for a birth certificate when another proof was available.
  • Using a document with only a year of birth when a full date is available elsewhere.
  • Entering a date in the application that differs from the age proof.
  • Relying only on an affidavit.

Quick decision guide

Class 10 certificate or passport? Use it. Only Aadhaar with a full date of birth? Use it with any supporting record. Nothing at all? Ask about a doctor’s age certificate and begin delayed birth registration in parallel.

One more tip

Keep a copy of whichever age proof you use with your marriage certificate. If anyone later questions your age at marriage, for example in a visa or pension matter, you can show exactly what the officer relied on.

Key terms explained

  • Date of birth proof: a document showing your full date of birth.
  • Delayed registration of birth: registering a birth after the normal period, under a specified procedure.
  • Recognised board: an education board recognised by the Government of India.
  • Doctor’s age certificate: a medical certificate estimating age, used where no documentary proof exists.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best alternative to a birth certificate?

A Class 10 certificate from a recognised board or a passport. Both show your full date of birth and are widely trusted.

Is Aadhaar enough?

Aadhaar is listed among date of birth proofs in Delhi guidelines. If it shows only the year or a placeholder date, use a stronger document.

I never went to school. What can I use?

A passport, driving licence or Aadhaar with full date of birth. Where nothing else exists, some guidelines accept a doctor's certificate of age.

How do I get a birth certificate now?

Apply to the municipal body or registrar of births where you were born for a copy or for delayed registration. Delayed registration can take time and may need supporting documents.

Can my parents' affidavit prove my age?

An affidavit alone is weak proof. Use it only to support a document.

My birth certificate has no name. Is it valid?

Birth certificates issued without a name can usually be updated with the name through the registrar. Until then, use another proof.

Does a foreign spouse need a birth certificate?

A valid passport is usually sufficient as age proof for a foreign spouse.

What if my documents disagree on my birth date?

Use the strongest one everywhere and explain the difference in your affidavit.

Can I register first and get a birth certificate later?

Yes, if you have another acceptable age proof now.

Is a horoscope or kundli accepted as age proof?

No. Horoscopes are not official records. Use one of the accepted government or educational documents.

Does the lack of a birth certificate delay registration?

Not if you bring another accepted proof that matches your affidavit.
