Marriage Registration in North Delhi District

Quick answer

After Delhi's 2026 reorganisation, North Delhi district has three sub-divisions: Burari, Adarsh Nagar and Badli. North Delhi has changed more than most districts over the last decade. Burari has grown from a cluster of villages into one of the city’s largest residential areas, and Adarsh Nagar and Badli are home to many young families and working couples, a large share of them tenants who moved to Delhi from other states. Many couples here married in their home towns and now need to register in Delhi. This guide explains how marriage registration works in North Delhi after the 2026 district changes and how to deal with the address-proof questions that come up most often.

North Delhi after the 2026 reorganisation

Delhi’s revenue districts were reorganised from 11 to 13 with effect from 1 January 2026. Shahdara district was dissolved, three new districts (Old Delhi, Central North and Outer North) were created, and the number of sub-divisions rose from 33 to 39. Some colonies that used to be in North Delhi, such as Model Town and parts of the Shalimar Bagh area, moved to the new Central North district, while the walled-city areas went to Old Delhi.

North Delhi now has 3 sub-divisions:

Sub-divisionCovers
BurariThe Burari area and surrounding localities
Adarsh NagarThe Adarsh Nagar area and surrounding localities
BadliThe Badli area and surrounding localities

Sub-division boundaries do not always follow the colony names people use every day. If you live near the boundary with Central North, Outer North or North West, check carefully. Always confirm the jurisdiction e-District shows for your exact locality before you apply.

Which office should you apply to?

You can usually apply to the SDM office that covers either the place where your marriage was solemnised or the place where either spouse lives, shown by address proof. If you married in your home town in another state, you can register in Delhi only if the law you are using allows registration based on residence; under the Hindu Marriage Act, residence in the district can be enough. Step by step in North Delhi

  1. Check documents for both spouses: identity, date-of-birth and address proof, with names and dates matching across all of them.
  2. Collect proof of the ceremony: the priest’s certificate from your home-town or local ceremony, photographs showing both of you, and the invitation card.
  3. Prepare two affidavits on e-stamp paper and have them notarised. Notaries and e-stamp vendors can be found near court complexes such as Rohini and Tis Hazari, and in larger local markets.
  4. Apply on e-District, selecting North Delhi district and the sub-division shown for your locality, and pay the fee.
  5. Book an appointment that both spouses and both witnesses can definitely attend.
  6. Deliver original affidavits to the SDM office if your sub-division asks for them for online applications.
  7. Attend with originals, both spouses and two witnesses.
  8. Download the certificate from e-District after approval, and check every detail.

Tenants and address proof

A large share of North Delhi couples rent their homes. Address proof is the document that decides jurisdiction, so it matters:

DocumentUsually accepted?
Aadhaar with the current addressYes
Registered rent agreementYes
Unregistered or notarised-only rent agreementOften not enough on its own
Utility bill in the landlord’s nameWeak; pair with a registered agreement
Bank passbook with current addressUsually yes

If your Aadhaar still shows your home-town address, update it online or get a registered rent agreement before you apply. See marriage registration in a rented house.

Married in your home town?

Couples from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Uttarakhand and elsewhere often marry in their home towns. You can register in North Delhi if one of you lives here and the route you choose allows registration by residence. The proof of ceremony comes from the home-town priest or temple. Make sure the certificate and photos clearly show both of you and the date.

Court marriage in North Delhi

For a court marriage under the Special Marriage Act, at least one partner must have lived in the district for 30 days before giving notice. The notice is displayed for 30 days, during which objections can be raised. If none is upheld, you marry before the marriage officer with three witnesses and receive the certificate. See court marriage in Delhi.

Practical tips for North Delhi

  • Update Aadhaar first: if your Aadhaar shows an address in another state, updating it to your Delhi address makes jurisdiction simple.
  • Choose Delhi witnesses: relatives who came from your home town for the wedding may not be available or may lack Delhi address proof; pick two friends or neighbours who live in Delhi.
  • Travel: the Yellow Line serves parts of the district; Burari roads can be slow at peak hours.
  • Keep the home-town priest’s number: if the office needs clarification, you can reach them quickly.

What to bring on the day

  • Originals and two self-attested copies of identity, age and address proof for both spouses
  • Both notarised affidavits on e-stamp paper
  • Proof of the ceremony and passport-size photographs
  • The e-District acknowledgement and fee receipt
  • Two witnesses, each with original identity and Delhi address proof and copies

At the appointment, the officer checks originals against your uploads, confirms that both spouses and both witnesses are present, and may ask a few simple questions about the wedding. If the file is complete, approval often follows on the day or shortly after.

After you receive the certificate

Download the certificate from e-District and read every line before you file it away. Names, dates of birth, the date and place of marriage and the parents’ names must match your documents exactly; a small error now becomes a real problem later at a passport office, a bank or an embassy. Save the PDF in two places, such as your email and a cloud drive. If the certificate is going abroad, begin state authentication and apostille straight away. If either of you is changing your surname, the certificate is the anchor document for updating your passport, Aadhaar, PAN and bank records. See name change after marriage in India.

Mistakes we see in North Delhi files

  • Using a notarised but unregistered rent agreement as the only address proof.
  • Applying in North Delhi for a Model Town address that now falls in Central North.
  • A home-town priest’s certificate with no date or with names that differ from Aadhaar.
  • Witnesses whose only address proof is from outside Delhi.

Worked example: home-town wedding, living in Burari

Ravi and Pooja married in Ravi’s village in Bihar and now rent a flat in Burari. They register their registered rent agreement as Ravi’s address proof, upload the village priest’s certificate and wedding photos, and attend the Burari SDM appointment with two colleagues who live in Delhi as witnesses.

Worked example: Aadhaar update before applying

Neha’s Aadhaar still showed her parents’ address in Meerut. Before applying, she updated it online to her Adarsh Nagar address. Once the update came through, she and her husband applied in North Delhi without any address questions.

Key terms explained

  • Jurisdiction: the authority of a particular office to register your marriage.
  • Reorganisation: the redrawing of Delhi’s districts from 11 to 13, effective 1 January 2026.
