Central North Delhi did not exist before 2026. When the Delhi government reorganised the city’s revenue districts with effect from 1 January 2026, it carved out this district covering some of the most established residential colonies in north Delhi: Shalimar Bagh, Model Town and the Shakur Basti area. If you married or live here, your registration now goes to a Central North sub-division. This guide explains what changed and how to register smoothly.

What changed in 2026

Before 2026, these areas were spread across the old North and North West districts. The reorganisation increased Delhi’s districts from 11 to 13 and its sub-divisions from 33 to 39. Central North Delhi was created with three sub-divisions:

Sub-divisionNamed after
Shalimar BaghThe Shalimar Bagh area and surrounding colonies
Model TownThe Model Town area and surrounding colonies
Shakur BastiThe Shakur Basti area and surrounding localities

Sub-division boundaries do not always match the colony names people use day to day. The legal jurisdiction is what e-District shows when you enter your locality, so always confirm there.

Old documents, new district

Many residents’ Aadhaar cards, voter IDs and rent agreements still say “North West Delhi” or “North Delhi”. That is not a problem. Jurisdiction depends on the locality and PIN code, not on the district name printed on the document. You do not need to update your documents before registering.

Which office covers you?

You can usually apply to the SDM office covering either the place where your marriage took place or the place where either of you lives. Couples who married at a banquet hall in Shalimar Bagh but live in Gurugram can therefore register in Central North Delhi, where the marriage was solemnised.

The process

  1. Gather documents for both spouses: identity, age and address proof.
  2. Collect proof of marriage: the priest’s or gurdwara’s certificate, photos and the card.
  3. Prepare two notarised affidavits on e-stamp paper.
  4. Apply on e-District, selecting the district and sub-division displayed for your locality.
  5. Pay the fee and book an appointment.
  6. Attend with two witnesses, both spouses and all originals.
  7. Download the certificate after approval.

Sikh weddings in Central North Delhi

North Delhi has a large Sikh population, and many weddings in Model Town and Shalimar Bagh are Anand Karaj ceremonies at local gurdwaras. In Delhi, these are commonly registered under the Hindu Marriage Act or the 2014 Order, using the gurdwara’s certificate as proof of the ceremony. See Anand Karaj marriage registration in Delhi.

Court marriage

For a Special Marriage Act marriage, at least one of you must have lived in Central North Delhi for 30 days before giving notice. After the 30-day notice period, you marry before the marriage officer with three witnesses. See court marriage in Delhi.

Practical tips

  • Check jurisdiction first. Because the district is new, couples sometimes pick the old district from habit. A wrong choice can mean a rejected application.
  • Travel: the Yellow Line and Pink Line metros serve parts of the district; Azadpur and Shalimar Bagh areas can be congested at peak hours.
  • Witnesses: any two adults with identity and Delhi address proof, ideally people who attended the wedding.
  • Keep your acknowledgement. If something changes on the portal, your application number is the key to tracing it.

If you applied around January 2026

Applications filed just before 1 January 2026 under an old district were generally handled by the office that received them. If yours seems stuck, check its status on e-District and contact the office shown there. See tracking your registration status.

Documents checklist

For each spouse: identity proof, date-of-birth proof, address proof, a notarised affidavit on e-stamp paper and passport-size photographs.

Joint: proof of the ceremony (gurdwara, temple or priest’s certificate, photographs and the card), the e-District acknowledgement and the fee receipt.

Each witness: original identity proof and Delhi address proof, with self-attested copies.

Carry two complete sets of self-attested copies, and keep originals separately so they are easy to show.

What happens at the appointment

The officer verifies that both spouses are present, checks original documents against what you uploaded, and confirms the details of the marriage with you and your witnesses. Everyone signs where required. If the file is complete, approval usually follows on the day or shortly after, and the certificate can be downloaded from e-District.

After the certificate

Check every detail, especially spellings and the date of marriage, as soon as you download it. If anything is wrong, raise it straight away. Save a PDF in two places. If the certificate is going abroad, start apostille next; if either of you is changing your name, the certificate is the anchor document for updating your passport, Aadhaar, PAN and bank records. See name change after marriage.

Worked example: Shalimar Bagh wedding

Harpreet and Jasleen marry by Anand Karaj at a gurdwara near Shalimar Bagh. Both live in the area. They select Central North district on e-District, upload the gurdwara certificate and photos, and attend the appointment with Jasleen’s uncle and a neighbour as witnesses. Their certificate is approved the same week.

Worked example: old address proof

Ankit’s Aadhaar shows his Model Town address with “North West Delhi” printed on it. e-District places his locality in Central North district. He and his wife apply there without changing his Aadhaar, and the registration goes through normally.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Choosing the old district out of habit. Since January 2026, many Model Town and Shalimar Bagh addresses map to Central North, not North or North West.
  • Gurdwara certificate details. Make sure the names and date on the gurdwara’s certificate match your affidavits and identity documents exactly.
  • Unprepared witnesses. Each witness must carry originals, not just photocopies.
  • Late application. Weddings in the winter season fill appointment slots fast; apply within two weeks of the wedding to stay well inside the 60-day window.

Key terms explained

  • Revenue district: an administrative district headed by a District Magistrate, used for services like marriage registration.
  • Sub-division: a unit within the district headed by an SDM.
  • Anand Karaj: the Sikh marriage ceremony.
  • e-District: Delhi’s online services portal, where you apply and track registration.

One-line takeaway

Central North Delhi is new from January 2026; go by the jurisdiction e-District shows for your locality, not the district printed on your old documents.
