How to Track Your Marriage Registration Status in Delhi

Quick answer

To track a Delhi marriage registration, open the e-District portal, use the track application option, choose the Revenue Department, and enter your application number and the security code. The status shows whether the application is pending verification, scheduled for appointment, approved or returned. Once approved, the certificate can be downloaded.

After you submit a marriage registration application in Delhi, the e-District portal becomes your window into what is happening with it. Tracking the status saves you trips to the SDM office and tells you early if something needs fixing. This guide explains how to check the status, what the common stages mean and what to do when an application seems stuck.

How to check your status

  1. Open the e-District Delhi portal.
  2. Choose the option to track an application. It is usually on the home page.
  3. Select the department: Revenue Department.
  4. Enter your application number exactly as it appears on your acknowledgement.
  5. Enter the security code shown on the screen.
  6. Search. The current status and any remarks are displayed.

You can also log in to the account you applied from and open the application from your list of applications, which often shows more detail.

What the stages usually mean

Status labels vary slightly as the portal is updated, but applications generally pass through these stages:

StageWhat it meansWhat you do
Submitted / pendingApplication received, fee paidNothing yet; keep documents ready
Under verificationOffice is checking uploadsMake sure original affidavits have reached the office if required
Appointment scheduledA date has been fixed for personal appearanceConfirm witnesses and prepare originals
Returned / objectionOffice needs a correction or extra documentRead the remark and act quickly
ApprovedMarriage officer has approved the registrationDownload the certificate
RejectedApplication cannot proceedRead the reason; you may need a fresh application

How long each stage takes

There is no single timeline across Delhi. The biggest variable is the wait for an appointment, which depends on the district and the season. Winter months are the busiest. After the appointment, approval is often quick. For realistic ranges, see how long marriage registration takes in Delhi.

If you need certainty, Tatkal registration prioritises your application for an additional fee; see Tatkal marriage registration.

When the status says “returned” or shows an objection

A returned application is not a rejection. It usually means one of these:

  • An upload is unreadable. Re-scan clearly and re-upload if the portal allows.
  • A document is missing. For example, a divorce decree for a previously married spouse or the priest’s certificate for a temple wedding.
  • Details do not match. A name or date differs between the form and the documents.
  • Original affidavits not received. If you applied online, the originals may need to reach the office.
  • Wrong district. Your address proof does not fall within the district selected.

Read the remark carefully. If it is unclear, call or visit the SDM office with your application number and ask exactly what is needed. Our rejection guide covers fixes for each case.

When an application seems stuck

If the status has not changed for a long time:

  1. Check the appointment date. If it has not yet arrived, the application may simply be waiting.
  2. Check whether you missed the appointment. If so, you may need a fresh date.
  3. Check for remarks you may have overlooked.
  4. Contact the SDM office with your application number, ideally in writing or in person, and ask for the current position.
  5. Use the grievance channel of the Delhi government if the office does not respond in a reasonable time.

Keep a log of your follow-ups: date, person contacted and what they said.

Keep your application number safe

Your application number links to personal information about both of you. Keep it private and share it only with people helping you. Store a copy of the acknowledgement in your email and on your phone; you will need the number for tracking, for the appointment and to download the certificate.

Tracking a court marriage

If you are marrying under the Special Marriage Act, the timeline has fixed points: notice, a 30-day objection window, and then solemnisation. Tracking tells you whether the notice has been published and whether any objection has been recorded. See court marriage timeline in Delhi.

After approval

As soon as the status shows the registration as approved, download the certificate, check every detail and save copies. See how to download your Delhi marriage certificate.

Tracking applications filed through a Citizen Service Centre

If a Citizen Service Centre (CSC) filed your application, the application number is on the receipt they gave you. You can track the status yourself on e-District with that number, without going back to the centre. If the CSC registered the application under its own login, ask them to share the acknowledgement or help you download the certificate once it is approved.

Status notifications

Some e-District services send SMS updates to the registered mobile number when the status changes. Do not rely on these alone; messages can be delayed or not sent. Check the portal directly every few days, especially as your appointment date approaches.

Understanding delays in the wedding season

Delhi’s wedding season, roughly November to February, sees a surge in registrations. During these months:

  • appointment slots fill faster, so the wait between applying and appearing can be longer;
  • offices may be busier on the day itself;
  • small document issues cost more time, because the next available slot may be weeks away.

Apply as early as possible after the wedding, and check your documents carefully before you submit, so that the first appointment is the only one you need.

A sample tracking log

Keeping a simple log makes follow-ups easier and gives you a record if you need to escalate:

DateStatus shownAction takenNext step
5 DecSubmittedOriginal affidavits posted by speed postCheck after 3 days
9 DecUnder verificationConfirmed affidavits received by phoneWait for appointment
12 DecAppointment scheduled for 3 JanWitnesses informedConfirm witnesses on 2 Jan
3 JanAppointment attendedAll documents verified, register signedCheck status daily
4 JanApprovedCertificate downloaded and checkedStart name change if needed

When to escalate

If your appointment date has passed, the documents were verified and the status has not moved for a long time, it is reasonable to escalate politely:

  1. Write to the SDM office with your application number, appointment date and a short request for the status.
  2. Ask to speak to the official in charge of marriage registration at that office.
  3. Use the Delhi government’s public grievance system, quoting your application number and the dates of your follow-ups.

Most delays are resolved at the first step. Escalation works best when your own file is complete and your log shows reasonable follow-ups.

What not to do

  • Do not file a second application for the same marriage while the first is pending. Duplicate applications cause confusion and delay.
  • Do not pay anyone to “push” your file. Government processing has no paid fast lane other than official Tatkal.
  • Do not ignore remarks. A returned application that is not acted on may eventually be closed.

Status checks for Tatkal applications

Tatkal applications move faster, so check the status more often, ideally each day after submitting. Make sure the original affidavits and any requested documents reach the office immediately; a missing paper costs more time in a Tatkal case than in a normal one, because the whole point is speed.

If you change your mobile number mid-application

Your e-District account is tied to the mobile number you registered with, and OTPs go there. If you change numbers while the application is pending, update the account details as soon as possible, or keep the old SIM active until the certificate is downloaded. Losing access to the account is one of the most common reasons couples cannot download their certificate later.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I find my application number?

It is on the acknowledgement generated when you submitted the application on e-District, and in the confirmation message or email sent to the registered account.

My status has been pending for weeks. Is something wrong?

Not necessarily. Appointments can be several weeks away in the wedding season. If your appointment date has passed and the status has not changed, contact the SDM office with your application number.

What does a 'returned' or 'objection' status mean?

The office needs something from you, such as a clearer document or a missing proof. Read the remark carefully and follow the instruction; you may need to upload a document or bring it on the appointment day.

Can someone else track my application?

Anyone with the application number can check the public status. Keep the number private, as it is linked to your personal details.

Does the status show the appointment date?

Usually the appointment details are available against the application or on your acknowledgement. If not shown, the SDM office can confirm.
