How to Download Your Delhi Marriage Certificate Online

Quick answer

Once the SDM approves your registration, the digitally signed marriage certificate is available on the e-District Delhi portal. Log in with the account used to apply, open your application or use the certificate download option, enter your application number and download the PDF. Check every detail on it the same day, and save copies in more than one place.

The certificate is the whole point of registering, and in Delhi it arrives as a digitally signed PDF on the e-District portal rather than as a paper document handed over at the counter. That makes it quick to get, but it also means you need your login, your application number and a few minutes to check the document properly. This guide covers the download, what to check and how to store and use the certificate.

When the certificate becomes available

The certificate is generated after the marriage officer approves your registration. That happens after your appointment, once the officer has verified documents and you and your witnesses have signed. In many offices approval comes the same day; in busy periods it can take a little longer. Check your application status on e-District rather than visiting the office; see how to track your marriage registration status.

Under the Special Marriage Act the certificate is issued after solemnisation (for a court marriage) or after the 30-day notice and registration (for an existing marriage registered under Sections 15 and 16).

How to download it, step by step

  1. Log in to e-District Delhi with the account you used to apply. If a Citizen Service Centre applied for you, ask them for the login details or use their help to download.
  2. Open your applications list and find the marriage registration application, or use the portal’s certificate download or print option.
  3. Enter your application number if asked. It appears on your acknowledgement slip.
  4. Download the PDF and save it immediately.
  5. Open the PDF and check the details (see below).

Menu names change when the portal is updated, so if you cannot find the option, look for anything labelled certificate download, print certificate or track application.

What to check on the certificate

Check these the same day, while the details are fresh and before you share the certificate with anyone:

If anything is wrong, apply for a correction quickly through the SDM office that registered the marriage. The sooner you do it, the easier it is. See correcting a mistake on your Delhi marriage certificate.

Understanding the digital signature

The certificate is signed electronically by the marriage officer. When you open it in a PDF reader that supports signatures, you may see a message that the signature is valid, or a warning that it could not be verified. A warning often means only that your PDF reader does not yet trust the signing authority’s certificate. You can usually validate it by opening the signature properties and trusting the certificate, or by opening the file in a different reader.

Do not edit, merge or “flatten” the PDF. Any change breaks the digital signature, and the document will no longer verify.

Save it properly

Treat the PDF like a passport scan:

  • Keep the original file in at least two places: your email and a cloud drive, for example.
  • Do not rename the file inside the PDF or edit it; renaming the file name itself is fine.
  • Print two or three colour copies on good paper for everyday use.
  • Self-attest photocopies when submitting to banks or offices, and give copies, not your only print.
  • Check DigiLocker. Some government certificates are available in DigiLocker; if yours is, link it for easy sharing.

Using the certificate in India

Most Indian authorities accept a printout of the downloaded certificate, often alongside the original PDF or a self-attested copy. Common uses include:

  • passport applications and changes of name or spouse details;
  • Aadhaar, PAN and bank name changes;
  • insurance nominations and claims;
  • spouse visas and dependent passes for jobs;
  • property, inheritance and pension matters.

Using the certificate abroad

Foreign authorities usually do not accept a simple printout. You will typically need the certificate apostilled by the Ministry of External Affairs if the destination country is a member of the Hague Apostille Convention, or attested through the relevant embassy if it is not. Some countries also want a certified translation. Start this early; see apostille for a Delhi marriage certificate and attestation versus apostille.

If you still cannot get the certificate, visit or write to the SDM office that registered your marriage with your application number, IDs and a short written request.

Getting another copy later

The PDF can usually be downloaded again from e-District as long as you have access to the account. If you lose access, or need a certified paper copy for a specific authority, apply to the SDM office for a duplicate or certified copy. See duplicate marriage certificate in Delhi.

Downloading on a phone

You can download the certificate on a phone, but a few precautions help:

  • Use a mobile browser rather than an in-app browser, so downloads save properly.
  • After downloading, open the file in a proper PDF app to confirm it is complete.
  • Move the file to cloud storage straight away; phone download folders get cleared.
  • If you need to send the certificate, send the PDF itself rather than a screenshot. A screenshot loses the digital signature and is often rejected.

Sharing the certificate safely

The certificate carries your full names, dates of birth and addresses. Share it only with authorities and organisations that need it, and prefer secure channels. When you send a copy to an employer, bank or embassy, consider adding a line across the copy such as “submitted to [organisation] for [purpose] on [date]”. This simple step makes misuse of a leaked copy harder. Never share the login for the account you used to apply.

The certificate and your name change

If either spouse plans to change their surname, the certificate is the main supporting document. Download it, check that your current names are correct, and then use it to update your passport, Aadhaar, PAN and bank accounts in the order that causes the least friction. See name change after marriage in India. If you are keeping your name, the certificate still records the marriage and is all most authorities need.

Protecting yourself from fake certificates

Occasionally, agents promise a “certificate in one day” without any appointment. A genuine Delhi certificate is issued only after the marriage officer verifies documents and sees both spouses and witnesses, and it can be checked against government records. A certificate obtained without that process can create serious legal trouble later, for example at a visa interview. If you are unsure whether a certificate is genuine, see how to verify a Delhi marriage certificate.

Frequently asked questions

When can I download the certificate?

After the marriage officer approves the registration following your appointment. Approval is often the same day or soon after, but timing varies by office.

The download shows an error. What should I do?

Wait a few hours and try again, check that you are entering the correct application number, and try a different browser. If it still fails, contact the SDM office with your application number.

Is a printout of the downloaded certificate valid?

The digitally signed PDF is the authoritative version. A printout is commonly accepted as a copy; for official use abroad you will usually need an attested or apostilled copy.

How do I verify the digital signature?

Open the PDF in a reader that supports digital signatures and check the signature panel. An unverified-signature warning often means the reader does not yet trust the signing certificate, not that the document is fake.

I lost access to the account used to apply. Can I still get the certificate?

Try password recovery with the registered mobile number. If that fails, the SDM office that registered the marriage can help you obtain a copy using your application details.
