Address Proof for Marriage Registration in Delhi
Delhi accepts Aadhaar, passport, voter ID, driving licence, ration card, bank passbook, utility bills and a registered rent agreement as address proof for marriage registration. Address proof decides which SDM office has jurisdiction, so at least one spouse's proof should show an address in the district you apply to, unless you apply where the marriage took place. Witnesses also need address proof, typically in Delhi.
- Accepted proofs
- Aadhaar, passport, voter ID, driving licence, ration card, bank passbook, utility bill, registered rent agreement
- Why it matters
- Decides jurisdiction of the SDM office
- Before and after marriage
- Some district guidelines ask for both
- Rented home
- Registered rent agreement, ideally with a utility bill
- Special Marriage Act
- Proof of 30 days' residence for one partner
Address proof does two jobs in marriage registration. Like any identity document, it shows where you live. More importantly, it decides which SDM office can register your marriage. Choosing the wrong office for your address is one of the most common reasons applications are rejected in Delhi. This guide explains which address proofs are accepted, how jurisdiction works, and what to do in the tricky cases: rented homes, recent moves, brides whose documents still show their parents’ address, and spouses who live outside Delhi.
Address proofs accepted in Delhi
Delhi district guidelines list a range of address proofs. Commonly accepted are:
| Document | Notes |
|---|---|
| Aadhaar card | Widely used; check the address is current |
| Passport | Address page; older passports may show old addresses |
| Voter ID | Shows constituency address |
| Driving licence | Shows address at time of issue |
| Ration card | Household address |
| Bank passbook | Must show your address |
| Utility bill (electricity, water, gas, landline, postpaid mobile) | Recent; ideally in your name |
| Registered rent agreement | Common for tenants |
How address decides jurisdiction
In Delhi, you generally apply to the marriage officer of the district where either spouse lives. If you married in Delhi but neither of you lives in Delhi, you apply where the marriage was solemnised. Under the Special Marriage Act, at least one partner must have lived in the district for 30 days before giving notice or applying.
So before choosing a district on e-District, look at your address proofs and ask: which district does this address fall in? Then apply there. See who can register a marriage in Delhi.
Proof before and after marriage
Some Delhi district guidelines ask for the spouses’ residence proof before and after marriage, especially the bride’s, since many brides move after the wedding. In practice, this means:
- Before marriage: the address on documents issued before the wedding, often the parents’ home.
- After marriage: the current marital home, shown by a rent agreement, utility bill, updated Aadhaar or the husband’s address proof combined with the couple living together.
If your district asks for both, bring both.
Tenants: rent agreements and bills
Many Delhi couples rent. Strong proof for tenants is:
- a registered rent agreement in your name;
- supported by a recent utility bill or bank statement at the same address.
An unregistered agreement on plain paper may be questioned. If the utility bills are in the landlord’s name, pair them with the rent agreement. See marriage registration when you live in a rented house.
Recently moved?
If you moved recently and your documents still show the old address:
- Under the Hindu Marriage Act or the 2014 Order, apply in the district shown on your documents, or use a new proof such as a registered rent agreement for the new address.
- Under the Special Marriage Act, you need 30 days’ residence in the district before notice. If you have not completed 30 days at the new address, apply in the old district if eligible, or wait. See the 30-day residence rule.
Brides whose documents show their parents’ address
This is extremely common. Options:
- Use the groom’s address proof for jurisdiction, applying in his district.
- Use the bride’s parents’ district, if that is more convenient and her documents show that address.
- Add a proof of the marital home for the bride, such as an updated Aadhaar or a joint rent agreement.
Choose whichever gives you the clearest jurisdiction and the most convenient office.
Spouses living outside Delhi
If one spouse lives outside Delhi, jurisdiction usually rests on the other spouse’s Delhi address. If neither lives in Delhi but the marriage took place in Delhi, jurisdiction rests on the place of marriage. Your own address proofs can then be from anywhere. See married in Delhi but living elsewhere.
Address proof for witnesses
Witnesses need address proof too. The 2014 Order and Delhi guidelines describe witnesses with proof of permanent Delhi residence. A witness whose Aadhaar or voter ID shows a Delhi address is the simplest choice. See witnesses for marriage registration.
Updating your address after marriage
Many spouses, particularly brides who move to a new home, update their address documents after the wedding. You do not have to do this before registering; jurisdiction can rest on the other spouse’s address or on the place of marriage. But updating sooner helps with everything that follows: bank accounts, passport, insurance and the spouse’s own identity documents. Aadhaar address updates can be made online with a valid proof of the new address, and other documents follow. Keep the marriage certificate handy, because some authorities accept it as a supporting document for an address change. See updating your Aadhaar after marriage.
Common address mistakes
| Mistake | What happens | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| District chosen does not match any address proof | Rejected for jurisdiction | Apply where an address proof places you |
| Only an unregistered rent agreement | Questioned | Add a utility bill or bank statement |
| Bride’s documents show another state | Jurisdiction unclear | Use groom’s Delhi proof |
| Witness address outside Delhi | Witness may not be accepted | Choose a Delhi-based witness |
| Under SMA, less than 30 days at new address | Notice not accepted | Use old district or wait |
Worked example: tenant couple
Shreya and Manish rent a flat in Lajpat Nagar (South East Delhi). Their Aadhaar cards still show their parents’ homes in Rohini and Bhopal. They have a registered rent agreement for the flat in both names and electricity bills in the landlord’s name. They apply to the South East Delhi office using the registered rent agreement as address proof, supported by the electricity bill. Jurisdiction is clear.
Worked example: bride with parents’ address
Pooja’s documents all show her parents’ address in Shahdara. Arjun’s Aadhaar shows his home in Janakpuri (West Delhi), where they now live. They apply to the West Delhi office using Arjun’s Aadhaar for jurisdiction, and include Pooja’s Aadhaar as her identity and pre-marriage address proof.
Quick decision guide
- Both spouses live in Delhi: apply in either spouse’s district; use the address proof that is clearest.
- One spouse lives in Delhi: apply in that spouse’s district.
- Neither lives in Delhi, married in Delhi: apply in the district where the wedding took place.
- Court marriage: apply where one partner has lived for at least 30 days.
Key terms explained
- Jurisdiction: the authority of a particular SDM office to register your marriage.

- Residence before and after marriage: some district guidelines ask for proof of both.
- 30-day residence rule: under the Special Marriage Act, one partner must have lived in the district for 30 days.

Frequently asked questions
Does the bride need Delhi address proof?
Not necessarily. At least one spouse should have address proof in the district you apply to, or the marriage should have been solemnised there. Some district guidelines also ask for the bride's address proof before and after marriage.
My Aadhaar shows my parents' address. Can I still apply in my new district?
Use another proof showing your new address, such as a registered rent agreement or a utility bill, or rely on your spouse's address proof for jurisdiction.
Is an unregistered rent agreement accepted?
A registered rent agreement is commonly accepted. An unregistered one may be questioned; support it with a utility bill or bank statement at the same address.
Can a utility bill in the landlord's name be used?
On its own it may not be enough. Combine it with a rent agreement showing you live at that address.
Do witnesses need Delhi address proof?
The 2014 Order and Delhi guidelines describe witnesses with proof of permanent Delhi residence. Choose witnesses whose documents show a Delhi address.
What if neither of us lives in Delhi?
If the marriage was solemnised in Delhi, apply to the office of the district where it took place. Your own address proofs can be from outside Delhi.
How recent must a utility bill be?
Use a recent bill, generally within the last few months. For the Special Marriage Act's 30-day rule, an older bill at the same address helps show length of residence.
Is a PG or hostel letter accepted?
It can support residence, especially with a rent receipt or agreement. Confirm with the office.
Can a bank statement be address proof?
Delhi guidelines list the bank passbook. A recent statement showing your address is often accepted as supporting proof.
Does address proof need to be in English?
Hindi and English documents are routinely accepted in Delhi.
