Married in Delhi but Living Elsewhere: Registration Rules
If you married in Delhi but neither of you lives in Delhi, you can register in Delhi with the marriage officer of the district where the wedding was solemnised, under the Delhi 2014 Order or the Hindu Marriage Act. You must still appear in person with witnesses, and Delhi offices commonly expect witnesses with Delhi address proof. Alternatively, you may register where you live under that state's rules.

Delhi hosts a large share of the country’s weddings. Families from Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and much further afield book Delhi venues, and NRI couples often choose Delhi because relatives can travel easily. After the celebrations, these couples go home to Gurugram, Mumbai, Bengaluru or London, and only later wonder where to register a marriage that happened in a city where neither of them lives. This guide explains the Delhi rules and the alternatives.
What Delhi’s rules say about jurisdiction
Two Delhi sources answer the jurisdiction question:
- The Delhi (Compulsory Registration of Marriage) Order, 2014 gives jurisdiction to the marriage officer of the district where the marriage was solemnised, with the SDM (Headquarters), ADM and DM having concurrent jurisdiction across Delhi.
- District guidance on Hindu Marriage Act registration has said that if the marriage was solemnised in Delhi but the applicants were not residing in Delhi, the application goes to the office of the area where the marriage was solemnised.
So if your wedding took place at a farmhouse in Chhattarpur, a banquet hall in Rajouri Garden or a hotel in Aerocity, the office covering that venue’s district is the one to approach, even though you live elsewhere.
Does the Delhi 2014 Order apply to you?
Yes, if your marriage was solemnised in Delhi and the other conditions are met: the groom was over 21, the bride over 18, and at least one of you is an Indian citizen. The Order applies to all marriages solemnised in Delhi, whatever your religion and wherever you live.
The Order also sets its 60-day expectation and late fees for these marriages. In practice, many couples who live elsewhere register in their home state instead, which also produces a valid certificate. If you do register under the Delhi Order, apply within 60 days to avoid the late fee.
Your options at a glance
| Option | When it suits you | Things to plan |
|---|---|---|
| Register in Delhi, district of the venue | Family and witnesses are in Delhi; you can return for one day | Witnesses with Delhi address proof; venue proof |
| Register in your home state | You live there and its rules accept marriages solemnised elsewhere | That state’s portal, office and witness rules |
| Register under the Special Marriage Act where you live | Inter-faith couples, or couples wanting SMA registration | 30 days’ residence in the district; 30-day notice; three witnesses |
Registering in Delhi when you live elsewhere: step by step
- Identify the revenue district of the wedding venue. Look at the venue’s address and match it to the district. Our district guides list localities.
- Collect venue proof. The invitation card, the venue booking receipt and the priest’s or officiant’s certificate naming the venue.
- Prepare documents for both spouses: identity, age and address proofs (your own addresses can be outside Delhi), notarised affidavits and photographs.
- Arrange witnesses who attended the wedding and have Delhi address proof.
- Apply on e-District selecting the venue’s district, and pay the fee.
- Plan a trip to Delhi for the appointment; both spouses and witnesses must attend.
- Download the certificate after approval.
Choosing witnesses when you live elsewhere
The 2014 Order describes witnesses who can certify the marriage and prove permanent residence in Delhi. If your family is in Delhi, this is easy. If your wedding guests were mostly from out of town, think about Delhi-based relatives or friends who attended. A witness from another state may not satisfy the office. See witnesses for marriage registration in Delhi.
Registering in your home state instead
Most states let you register where you live, and some let you register a marriage solemnised in another state. The procedure, documents and witness rules differ by state. For neighbouring areas, see our guides to Noida, Ghaziabad, Gurugram and Faridabad.
When comparing, think about:
- travel: one trip to Delhi versus none;
- witnesses: who can appear where;
- speed: appointment waits in each place;
- documents: whether the venue’s proof is accepted in your state.
If you are NRIs who married in Delhi
Many NRI couples marry in Delhi during a short visit. The most important point is to register before you leave, because both spouses must appear in person. Plan the registration into your trip: apply as soon as the wedding is over, consider Tatkal if time is short, and keep a few spare days. If the certificate will be used abroad, allow time for an apostille too. See NRI marriage registration in Delhi and Tatkal registration.
Worked example: Gurugram couple, Delhi wedding
Ankit and Shreya live in Gurugram and married at a banquet hall in Kirti Nagar, West Delhi. Their parents live in Delhi. They have two options. They can apply to the West Delhi district office on the basis of the wedding venue, using Shreya’s parents’ neighbour and her uncle as witnesses, both of whom attended and have Delhi addresses. Or they can register in Gurugram under Haryana’s system on the basis of their residence. Because their witnesses and venue proof are in Delhi and they want the certificate quickly before a work posting, they choose West Delhi and apply within 30 days of the wedding, avoiding any late fee.
Worked example: Mumbai couple, Delhi destination wedding
Kabir and Aditi, both from Mumbai, held their wedding at a Delhi hotel because Aditi’s grandparents live there. Back in Mumbai, they would rather not travel again. They decide to register in Mumbai under Maharashtra’s rules, using the Delhi venue’s proof and their Mumbai address proofs, after checking that the Mumbai office accepts marriages solemnised in another state. Their certificate is valid across India.
Proving where the wedding took place
When you register in Delhi on the basis of the wedding venue, proof of the venue matters more than usual, because it is what gives the Delhi office jurisdiction. Gather at least two of these:
- the invitation card showing the venue address;
- the booking receipt or invoice from the banquet hall, hotel, farmhouse or community centre;
- the certificate of the priest or officiant naming the venue;
- photographs taken at the venue, ideally showing recognisable features or signage;
- affidavits from witnesses who attended.
Make sure the venue address on these documents falls inside the district you select on e-District. A wedding at a venue on a district boundary is a common source of confusion; check the venue’s official address and its revenue district before applying.
How long to keep the trip
Both spouses must be in Delhi on the appointment day, along with the witnesses. If you live outside Delhi, plan to stay at least one working day before and after the appointment in case of delays, and avoid booking non-refundable travel for the appointment day itself. If you also need an apostille before leaving India, add more time, since that is a separate process with its own timeline.
Common mistakes
- Applying in a Delhi district that matches a relative’s address rather than the venue.
- Bringing witnesses without Delhi address proof to a Delhi office.
- Leaving Delhi after the wedding without registering, when both spouses must attend in person.
- Using the reception venue instead of the ceremony venue as the place of marriage.
Whichever route you choose, register once
Register in one place only. A certificate issued in Delhi is valid in every state, and a certificate from your home state is valid in Delhi. Registering twice creates two records of the same marriage, which can cause confusion later in passport and visa applications.
Plan it before the guests leave
If you are marrying in Delhi and live elsewhere, the easiest time to register is the week after the wedding, while both of you, your witnesses and all the documents are in the same city. WedProof can plan the application before the wedding, so the appointment falls before you travel. Start with a free document check.
Frequently asked questions
We had a destination wedding in Delhi and live in Mumbai. Must we register in Delhi?
Delhi's 2014 Order expects marriages solemnised in Delhi to be registered, and the office of the place of marriage has jurisdiction when neither spouse lives in Delhi. Many couples, however, register in their state of residence under that state's rules; check which is practical for you.
Do our witnesses have to be from Delhi?
The 2014 Order describes witnesses who can prove permanent residence in Delhi. If you register in Delhi, choose witnesses with Delhi address proof who attended the wedding.
Does the 60-day deadline apply to us?
Under the Delhi 2014 Order, the 60-day expectation applies to marriages solemnised in Delhi regardless of where the couple lives. Late fees apply after 60 days if you register under the Order.
Can we use our home-state address proof in Delhi?
Yes, your own address proofs can be from your home state when you are registering on the basis of where the marriage took place. The proof of the wedding venue matters more for jurisdiction.
