Marriage Registration in South Delhi District
South Delhi has four sub-divisions after the 2026 reorganisation: Mehrauli, Chhatarpur, Malviya Nagar and Deoli. Couples who married at a South Delhi venue, such as a Chhatarpur farmhouse, or who live in areas like Saket or Malviya Nagar, apply on e-District to the sub-division shown for their locality and attend with two witnesses. DM South lists the Hindu Marriage Act fee as ₹100.

South Delhi is the city’s wedding capital. The farmhouses of Chhatarpur and the Mehrauli belt host some of Delhi’s biggest celebrations, while neighbourhoods such as Saket, Malviya Nagar and Sheikh Sarai are home to many young professional couples. Chhatarpur Mandir also sees a steady stream of temple weddings. If you married or live in South Delhi, this guide explains how to register your marriage with the right sub-division.
South Delhi after the 2026 reorganisation
Delhi’s revenue districts were reorganised from 11 to 13 with effect from 1 January 2026. Shahdara district was dissolved, three new districts (Old Delhi, Central North and Outer North) were created, and the number of sub-divisions rose from 33 to 39. South Delhi now has four sub-divisions, with Chhatarpur and Deoli listed alongside Mehrauli and Malviya Nagar.
South Delhi now has 4 sub-divisions:
| Sub-division | Covers |
|---|---|
| Mehrauli | The Mehrauli area and surrounding localities |
| Chhatarpur | The Chhatarpur area and surrounding localities |
| Malviya Nagar | The Malviya Nagar area and surrounding localities |
| Deoli | The Deoli area and surrounding localities |
Sub-division boundaries do not always follow the colony names people use every day. Saket, Malviya Nagar, Mehrauli and Chhatarpur are generally in this district, but areas near the South East district boundary, such as around Kalkaji, may be in South East instead. Always confirm the jurisdiction e-District shows for your exact locality before you apply.
Which office should you apply to?
You can usually apply to the SDM office that covers either the place where your marriage was solemnised or the place where either spouse lives, shown by address proof. The farmhouse belt means many couples who live in Gurugram, Noida or other districts register here on the basis of the place of marriage.
Which law applies?
| Your situation | Route |
|---|---|
| Hindu, Sikh, Jain or Buddhist couple with a religious ceremony | Hindu Marriage Act registration |
| Any couple married in Delhi, of any religion | Delhi Compulsory Registration of Marriage Order, 2014 |
| Inter-faith couple, or a couple wanting a civil marriage | Special Marriage Act (court marriage) |
| One spouse a foreign national | See documents for foreign nationals |
Step by step in South Delhi
- Check documents for both spouses: identity, date-of-birth and address proof, with names and dates matching across all of them.
- Collect proof of the ceremony: the pandit’s certificate, photographs of the ceremony, and the invitation card showing the wedding date.
- Prepare two affidavits on e-stamp paper and have them notarised. Notaries and e-stamp vendors work around the Saket court complex.
- Apply on e-District, selecting South Delhi district and the sub-division shown for your locality, and pay the fee.
- Book an appointment that both spouses and both witnesses can definitely attend.
- Deliver original affidavits to the SDM office if your sub-division asks for them for online applications.
- Attend with originals, both spouses and two witnesses.
- Download the certificate from e-District after approval, and check every detail.

Farmhouse weddings in Chhatarpur and Mehrauli
Farmhouse weddings often involve several functions over several days, and that can create confusion about the date:
- Your date of marriage is the date of the main ceremony (for example, the pheras), not the sangeet or reception.
- Make sure the pandit’s certificate, invitation card and affidavits all show the same date. If the pheras were after midnight, decide which date you are using and use it consistently.
- Note the venue address carefully, because it is what gives South Delhi jurisdiction if you live elsewhere.
Temple weddings at Chhatarpur
Couples who marry at Chhatarpur Mandir or other South Delhi temples should ask for the temple’s certificate or receipt and the priest’s certificate. Together with photos, these are strong proof of the ceremony. See temple marriage registration in Delhi.
Court marriage in South Delhi
For a court marriage under the Special Marriage Act, at least one partner must have lived in the district for 30 days before giving notice. The notice is displayed for 30 days, during which objections can be raised. If none is upheld, you marry before the marriage officer with three witnesses and receive the certificate. See court marriage in Delhi.
Practical tips for South Delhi
- Fee published: DM South’s website lists the Hindu Marriage Act registration fee as ₹100; check e-District for the current amount.
- Metro: the Yellow Line and Magenta Line serve much of the district; Mehrauli and Chhatarpur roads can be slow.
- Weekday leave: professional couples should book a slot that suits both spouses and both witnesses, ideally early in the day.
- Gurugram residents: if you married in South Delhi, you can usually register here rather than in Haryana.
What to bring on the day
- Originals and two self-attested copies of identity, age and address proof for both spouses
- Both notarised affidavits on e-stamp paper
- Proof of the ceremony and passport-size photographs
- The e-District acknowledgement and fee receipt
- Two witnesses, each with original identity and Delhi address proof and copies
At the appointment, the officer checks originals against your uploads, confirms that both spouses and both witnesses are present, and may ask a few simple questions about the wedding. If the file is complete, approval often follows on the day or shortly after.
After you receive the certificate
Download the certificate from e-District and read every line before you file it away. Names, dates of birth, the date and place of marriage and the parents’ names must match your documents exactly; a small error now becomes a real problem later at a passport office, a bank or an embassy. Save the PDF in two places, such as your email and a cloud drive. If the certificate is going abroad, begin state authentication and apostille straight away. If either of you is changing your surname, the certificate is the anchor document for updating your passport, Aadhaar, PAN and bank records. See name change after marriage in India.
Mistakes we see in South Delhi files
- Using the reception date instead of the ceremony date.
- Venue addresses that are incomplete or show a farmhouse name only.
- Applying in South Delhi for an address that falls in South East Delhi.
- Witnesses who were out-of-town guests and cannot attend.
Worked example: farmhouse wedding, couple in Gurugram
Arjun and Tanya marry at a farmhouse in Chhatarpur and live in Gurugram. They register in South Delhi based on the place of marriage, with the pandit’s certificate, photos of the pheras and the invitation card all showing the same date. Two Delhi-based friends attend as witnesses.
Worked example: young couple in Malviya Nagar
Kriti and Siddharth marry in a small temple ceremony and live in a rented flat in Malviya Nagar. They use Kriti’s Aadhaar with the flat address and a registered rent agreement, apply in the Malviya Nagar sub-division and finish at the first appointment.
