West Delhi has a strong Punjabi character, from the markets of Rajouri Garden and Tilak Nagar to the residential blocks of Janakpuri and Vikaspuri. Weddings here are big, joyful and often held at the banquet halls along Najafgarh Road or at neighbourhood gurdwaras. If you married or live in West Delhi, this guide explains how to register your marriage with the right sub-division after the 2026 district changes.

West Delhi after the 2026 reorganisation

Delhi’s revenue districts were reorganised from 11 to 13 with effect from 1 January 2026. Shahdara district was dissolved, three new districts (Old Delhi, Central North and Outer North) were created, and the number of sub-divisions rose from 33 to 39. West Delhi now has three sub-divisions: Rajouri Garden, Janakpuri and Vikaspuri.

West Delhi now has 3 sub-divisions:

Sub-divisionCovers
Rajouri GardenThe Rajouri Garden area and surrounding localities
JanakpuriThe Janakpuri area and surrounding localities
VikaspuriThe Vikaspuri area and surrounding localities

Sub-division boundaries do not always follow the colony names people use every day. Rajouri Garden, Tilak Nagar, Janakpuri, Vikaspuri and parts of Punjabi Bagh and Paschim Vihar are generally in this district, but check colonies near the North West and South West boundaries. Always confirm the jurisdiction e-District shows for your exact locality before you apply.

Which office should you apply to?

You can usually apply to the SDM office that covers either the place where your marriage was solemnised or the place where either spouse lives, shown by address proof. Many West Delhi weddings are held at banquet halls whose guests come from across Delhi and Punjab; registration can be done where the wedding took place or where either spouse lives.

Step by step in West Delhi

  1. Check documents for both spouses: identity, date-of-birth and address proof, with names and dates matching across all of them.
  2. Collect proof of the ceremony: the gurdwara or pandit’s certificate, photographs of the lavaan or pheras, and the invitation card.
  3. Prepare two affidavits on e-stamp paper and have them notarised. Notaries and e-stamp vendors operate around court complexes such as Tis Hazari and Dwarka, and in large markets like Rajouri Garden.
  4. Apply on e-District, selecting West Delhi district and the sub-division shown for your locality, and pay the fee.
  5. Book an appointment that both spouses and both witnesses can definitely attend.
  6. Deliver original affidavits to the SDM office if your sub-division asks for them for online applications.
  7. Attend with originals, both spouses and two witnesses.
  8. Download the certificate from e-District after approval, and check every detail.

Anand Karaj and Punjabi Hindu weddings

West Delhi’s gurdwaras host many Anand Karaj ceremonies. In Delhi, these marriages are commonly registered under the Hindu Marriage Act (which covers Sikhs) or under the 2014 Order. The gurdwara’s certificate, photos of the lavaan and the invitation card are your proof of the ceremony. Punjabi Hindu weddings follow the same pattern with the pandit’s certificate. See Anand Karaj marriage registration in Delhi.

Banquet halls on Najafgarh Road

Big banquet weddings usually include several functions. Use the date of the main ceremony (the lavaan or pheras) consistently on the certificate, card and affidavits. If the card shows only the reception, the priest’s or gurdwara’s certificate becomes especially important.

Court marriage in West Delhi

For a court marriage under the Special Marriage Act, at least one partner must have lived in the district for 30 days before giving notice. The notice is displayed for 30 days, during which objections can be raised. If none is upheld, you marry before the marriage officer with three witnesses and receive the certificate. See court marriage in Delhi.

Practical tips for West Delhi

  • Metro: the Blue Line and Pink Line serve Rajouri Garden, Janakpuri and nearby areas.
  • Relatives from Punjab: guests who came from Punjab may not have Delhi address proof; choose Delhi-resident witnesses.
  • Name spellings: Punjabi names are often spelt differently across documents (for example, Gurpreet and Gurprit). Check carefully and add a one-name affidavit if needed.
  • Busy season: apply soon after a winter wedding.

What to bring on the day

  • Originals and two self-attested copies of identity, age and address proof for both spouses
  • Both notarised affidavits on e-stamp paper
  • Proof of the ceremony and passport-size photographs
  • The e-District acknowledgement and fee receipt
  • Two witnesses, each with original identity and Delhi address proof and copies

At the appointment, the officer checks originals against your uploads, confirms that both spouses and both witnesses are present, and may ask a few simple questions about the wedding. If the file is complete, approval often follows on the day or shortly after.

After you receive the certificate

Download the certificate from e-District and read every line before you file it away. Names, dates of birth, the date and place of marriage and the parents’ names must match your documents exactly; a small error now becomes a real problem later at a passport office, a bank or an embassy. Save the PDF in two places, such as your email and a cloud drive. If the certificate is going abroad, begin state authentication and apostille straight away. If either of you is changing your surname, the certificate is the anchor document for updating your passport, Aadhaar, PAN and bank records. See name change after marriage in India.

Mistakes we see in West Delhi files

  • Name spellings that differ across documents without a one-name affidavit.
  • Invitation cards that show only the reception date.
  • Witnesses from Punjab without Delhi address proof.
  • Choosing West Delhi for a Paschim Vihar or Punjabi Bagh address that falls in another district.

Worked example: Anand Karaj in Tilak Nagar

Manpreet and Harleen marry at a gurdwara in Tilak Nagar and live in Janakpuri. They register under the Hindu Marriage Act in the sub-division e-District shows, with the gurdwara certificate and photos of the lavaan, and attend with Harleen’s brother and a neighbour as witnesses.

Worked example: spelling differences

Gurprit’s Class 10 certificate spells his name “Gurpreet”. Before applying in Rajouri Garden, he adds a one-name affidavit linking the two spellings, and the registration goes through at the first appointment.

Key terms explained
