Marriage Registration in South West Delhi District

Quick answer

South West Delhi has four sub-divisions after the 2026 reorganisation: Dwarka, Najafgarh, Matiala and Bijwasan. Couples who married or live in Dwarka, Najafgarh, Palam or nearby areas apply on e-District to the sub-division shown for their locality and attend with two witnesses. Being close to the airport, the district sees many NRI and Tatkal registrations before couples fly out.

South West Delhi combines the planned sub-city of Dwarka, the growing villages and colonies of Najafgarh and Matiala, and the Bijwasan belt near the airport, where farmhouses and hotels host many weddings. Because the international airport is on its doorstep, the district sees a large number of couples who need their certificate quickly before one of them flies back abroad. This guide explains how marriage registration works in South West Delhi and how to plan around tight travel dates.

South West Delhi after the 2026 reorganisation

Delhi’s revenue districts were reorganised from 11 to 13 with effect from 1 January 2026. Shahdara district was dissolved, three new districts (Old Delhi, Central North and Outer North) were created, and the number of sub-divisions rose from 33 to 39. South West Delhi now has four sub-divisions: Dwarka, Najafgarh, Matiala and Bijwasan.

South West Delhi now has 4 sub-divisions:

Sub-divisionCovers
DwarkaThe Dwarka area and surrounding localities
NajafgarhThe Najafgarh area and surrounding localities
MatialaThe Matiala area and surrounding localities
BijwasanThe Bijwasan area and surrounding localities

Sub-division boundaries do not always follow the colony names people use every day. Dwarka’s sectors, Najafgarh, Uttam Nagar’s southern edge and Palam are generally in this district, but some neighbouring colonies fall in West or New Delhi. Always confirm the jurisdiction e-District shows for your exact locality before you apply.

Which office should you apply to?

You can usually apply to the SDM office that covers either the place where your marriage was solemnised or the place where either spouse lives, shown by address proof. Couples who married at a Bijwasan farmhouse or an Aerocity-area hotel but live elsewhere can usually register here on the basis of the place of marriage, subject to the venue being within the district.

Step by step in South West Delhi

  1. Check documents for both spouses: identity, date-of-birth and address proof, with names and dates matching across all of them.
  2. Collect proof of the ceremony: the pandit’s certificate, photographs of the ceremony, and the invitation card.
  3. Prepare two affidavits on e-stamp paper and have them notarised. Notaries and e-stamp vendors operate around the Dwarka court complex.
  4. Apply on e-District, selecting South West Delhi district and the sub-division shown for your locality, and pay the fee.
  5. Book an appointment that both spouses and both witnesses can definitely attend.
  6. Deliver original affidavits to the SDM office if your sub-division asks for them for online applications.
  7. Attend with originals, both spouses and two witnesses.
  8. Download the certificate from e-District after approval, and check every detail.

NRI couples and tight timelines

If one of you lives abroad and has limited leave, plan registration as part of the wedding itself:

  1. Before the wedding: check documents and prepare affidavits; confirm two Delhi witnesses.
  2. Wedding day: collect the pandit’s certificate and photos.
  3. Within days: apply on e-District; if the normal slot is too late, use Tatkal for an extra ₹10,000.
  4. After the certificate: start state authentication and apostille immediately if the certificate is needed abroad.

Both spouses must attend in person, so the NRI spouse must still be in India for the appointment, unless an option such as video appearance is allowed in your case. See NRI marriage registration in Delhi and apostille of a marriage certificate.

Dwarka society residents

Many Dwarka residents live in cooperative group housing societies. Aadhaar or a passport with the flat address is the simplest address proof. Tenants should use a registered rent agreement.

Court marriage in South West Delhi

For a court marriage under the Special Marriage Act, at least one partner must have lived in the district for 30 days before giving notice. The notice is displayed for 30 days, during which objections can be raised. If none is upheld, you marry before the marriage officer with three witnesses and receive the certificate. See court marriage in Delhi.

Practical tips for South West Delhi

  • Metro: the Blue Line and Airport Express serve Dwarka and nearby areas.
  • Tatkal for flyers: if a spouse’s return flight is within two weeks, check Tatkal availability right after the wedding.
  • Passport-ready certificate: make sure spellings match passports exactly, as embassies compare them.
  • Witnesses: neighbours in your society make reliable witnesses.

What to bring on the day

  • Originals and two self-attested copies of identity, age and address proof for both spouses
  • Both notarised affidavits on e-stamp paper
  • Proof of the ceremony and passport-size photographs
  • The e-District acknowledgement and fee receipt
  • Two witnesses, each with original identity and Delhi address proof and copies

At the appointment, the officer checks originals against your uploads, confirms that both spouses and both witnesses are present, and may ask a few simple questions about the wedding. If the file is complete, approval often follows on the day or shortly after.

After you receive the certificate

Download the certificate from e-District and read every line before you file it away. Names, dates of birth, the date and place of marriage and the parents’ names must match your documents exactly; a small error now becomes a real problem later at a passport office, a bank or an embassy. Save the PDF in two places, such as your email and a cloud drive. If the certificate is going abroad, begin state authentication and apostille straight away. If either of you is changing your surname, the certificate is the anchor document for updating your passport, Aadhaar, PAN and bank records. See name change after marriage in India.

Mistakes we see in South West Delhi files

  • Booking a normal appointment that falls after the NRI spouse’s flight.
  • Spellings on the certificate that differ from passports.
  • Venue addresses near the district boundary that actually fall in New Delhi or West Delhi.
  • Delaying apostille until after the spouse has left India.

Worked example: Tatkal before a flight

Karan, who works in Canada, marries Riya in Dwarka on a Sunday. His flight is ten days later. They apply under Tatkal on Monday, attend the appointment with two neighbours as witnesses, and download the certificate in time to start apostille before he leaves.

Worked example: farmhouse wedding in Bijwasan

Meghna and Rahul, who live in Noida, marry at a farmhouse in the Bijwasan area. They register in South West Delhi on the basis of the place of marriage, using the pandit’s certificate and photos, and attend with Rahul’s cousin from Dwarka and a friend as witnesses.

Key terms explained

  • Sub-division: the unit within a district headed by a Sub-Divisional Magistrate, who registers marriages.
  • SDM: the officer who acts as registrar under the Hindu Marriage Act and as marriage officer under the Special Marriage Act.
  • Jurisdiction: the authority of a particular office to register your marriage.
  • Reorganisation: the redrawing of Delhi’s districts from 11 to 13, effective 1 January 2026.

One-line takeaway

In South West Delhi, plan around flights: apply straight after the wedding, use Tatkal if needed, and start apostille as soon as the certificate is issued.
