New Delhi district covers the capital’s administrative heart: Lutyens’ Delhi, Connaught Place, Chanakyapuri’s diplomatic enclave and the Delhi Cantonment. It is also where some of Delhi’s best-known wedding venues sit, from Gurdwara Bangla Sahib and the Laxmi Narayan Temple to historic churches and five-star hotels. Many couples who marry here live elsewhere, and a good number involve a foreign national or an NRI spouse. This guide explains how to register a marriage in New Delhi district and how to handle the situations that come up most often here.

New Delhi after the 2026 reorganisation

Delhi’s revenue districts were reorganised from 11 to 13 with effect from 1 January 2026. Shahdara district was dissolved, three new districts (Old Delhi, Central North and Outer North) were created, and the number of sub-divisions rose from 33 to 39. New Delhi district kept its core character through the changes, with two sub-divisions.

New Delhi now has 2 sub-divisions:

Sub-divisionCovers
New DelhiThe New Delhi area and surrounding localities
Delhi CantonmentThe Delhi Cantonment area and surrounding localities

Sub-division boundaries do not always follow the colony names people use every day. Areas such as Connaught Place, Chanakyapuri, Gole Market and the Cantonment are generally within this district, but boundaries with Central and South West districts can surprise people. Always confirm the jurisdiction e-District shows for your exact locality before you apply.

Which office should you apply to?

You can usually apply to the SDM office that covers either the place where your marriage was solemnised or the place where either spouse lives, shown by address proof. Because so many couples marry at New Delhi venues but live in other districts or even outside Delhi, the place-of-marriage option is used here more than anywhere else. If you married at a hotel in New Delhi and live in Gurugram, New Delhi district is usually the natural place to register.

Step by step in New Delhi

  1. Check documents for both spouses: identity, date-of-birth and address proof, with names and dates matching across all of them.
  2. Collect proof of the ceremony: a certificate from the gurdwara, temple, church or officiant; a few clear photographs showing both of you during the ceremony; and the invitation card.
  3. Prepare two affidavits on e-stamp paper and have them notarised. Notaries and e-stamp vendors work around the Patiala House court complex and in Connaught Place.
  4. Apply on e-District, selecting New Delhi district and the sub-division shown for your locality, and pay the fee.
  5. Book an appointment that both spouses and both witnesses can definitely attend.
  6. Deliver original affidavits to the SDM office if your sub-division asks for them for online applications.
  7. Attend with originals, both spouses and two witnesses.
  8. Download the certificate from e-District after approval, and check every detail.

Gurdwara, temple, church and hotel weddings

New Delhi district hosts every kind of ceremony, and each produces slightly different proof:

TemplePriest’s or temple certificate, photosHindu Marriage Act

Foreign nationals and NRIs

With embassies in Chanakyapuri and many international couples marrying at New Delhi hotels, registrations involving a foreign spouse are common here. The foreign spouse usually needs a valid passport and visa, and a certificate from their embassy about marital status and nationality. Documents in other languages need translation. If the certificate will be used abroad, plan for apostille. See marrying a foreign national in Delhi.

Delhi Cantonment

For defence families living in the Cantonment, the process is the same as elsewhere in Delhi. Service identity documents can support identity, but bring standard address and age proof as well, and check which sub-division e-District shows for your quarter.

Court marriage in New Delhi

For a court marriage under the Special Marriage Act, at least one partner must have lived in the district for 30 days before giving notice. The notice is displayed for 30 days, during which objections can be raised. If none is upheld, you marry before the marriage officer with three witnesses and receive the certificate. See court marriage in Delhi.

Practical tips for New Delhi

  • Security and access: some venues and government areas have restricted access. Allow time for parking and entry, especially around Connaught Place and India Gate.
  • Hotel weddings: ask the officiant for a signed certificate before you check out; tracking down a visiting pandit later is harder.
  • Foreign spouses: book the embassy appointment for the marital status certificate early; it often takes longer than the registration itself.
  • Witnesses: if most guests flew in, keep two Delhi-resident friends or relatives available for the appointment.

What to bring on the day

  • Originals and two self-attested copies of identity, age and address proof for both spouses
  • Both notarised affidavits on e-stamp paper
  • Proof of the ceremony and passport-size photographs
  • The e-District acknowledgement and fee receipt
  • Two witnesses, each with original identity and Delhi address proof and copies

At the appointment, the officer checks originals against your uploads, confirms that both spouses and both witnesses are present, and may ask a few simple questions about the wedding. If the file is complete, approval often follows on the day or shortly after.

After you receive the certificate

Download the certificate from e-District and read every line before you file it away. Names, dates of birth, the date and place of marriage and the parents’ names must match your documents exactly; a small error now becomes a real problem later at a passport office, a bank or an embassy. Save the PDF in two places, such as your email and a cloud drive. If the certificate is going abroad, begin state authentication and apostille straight away. If either of you is changing your surname, the certificate is the anchor document for updating your passport, Aadhaar, PAN and bank records. See name change after marriage in India.

Mistakes we see in New Delhi files

  • Registering in New Delhi based on a venue but uploading a residence address from another district as the only proof, without stating the place of marriage clearly.
  • A foreign spouse’s embassy certificate that is older than the office accepts or not translated.
  • Hotel invitation cards that show the reception date rather than the wedding date.
  • Witnesses who were guests from abroad and cannot attend the appointment.

Worked example: gurdwara wedding, couple living in Gurugram

Gurmeet and Simran marry by Anand Karaj at a gurdwara in New Delhi. They live in Gurugram. They register in New Delhi district on the basis of the place of marriage, upload the gurdwara certificate and photos, and attend with Simran’s cousin from Rajouri Garden and a family friend from Pitampura as witnesses.

Worked example: hotel wedding with a foreign spouse

Aditi, an Indian citizen, marries Lukas, a German national, in a Hindu ceremony at a New Delhi hotel. Lukas provides his passport, visa and a certificate from his embassy. They register under the Delhi 2014 Order at the New Delhi sub-division, then apostille the certificate for use in Germany.

Key terms explained

  • Sub-division: the unit within a district headed by a Sub-Divisional Magistrate, who registers marriages.
  • SDM: the officer who acts as registrar under the Hindu Marriage Act and as marriage officer under the Special Marriage Act.

  • Reorganisation: the redrawing of Delhi’s districts from 11 to 13, effective 1 January 2026.
