Christian Marriage Registration in Delhi

Quick answer

Christian marriages in India are solemnised under the Indian Christian Marriage Act, 1872, and the church records the marriage and issues a certificate. In Delhi, couples also register the marriage with the SDM under the Delhi (Compulsory Registration of Marriage) Order, 2014, which the Delhi High Court has confirmed applies to Christian marriages. Apply on e-District with the church certificate as proof and attend with two witnesses.

Delhi’s Christian communities, from the historic cathedrals and churches of central Delhi to congregations across every district, celebrate many weddings each year. The church ceremony is legally significant: it is a marriage under the Indian Christian Marriage Act, 1872, and the church keeps a record. But Delhi also requires registration of every marriage solemnised in the city under its 2014 Order. This guide explains how the two fit together and how to get your government certificate.

Two records, two purposes

RecordWho issues itPurpose
Church marriage certificate and register entryThe church or licensed minister, under the 1872 ActRecords the solemnisation under Christian marriage law
Government marriage certificateThe SDM, under the Delhi 2014 OrderSatisfies Delhi’s compulsory registration and is widely accepted by government bodies

Many couples have only the church certificate. For passports, visas, banks and courts, the government certificate is usually simpler, and it is required under the Delhi Order.

The Indian Christian Marriage Act, 1872

The 1872 Act governs how Christian marriages are solemnised in India, including who can solemnise them (such as ministers of religion licensed under the Act), notice requirements and how marriages are recorded. Churches handle these steps as part of preparing for the wedding. If either party is not Christian, the church’s own rules and the Act’s conditions decide whether a church wedding is possible.

The Delhi 2014 Order applies to Christians

The Delhi (Compulsory Registration of Marriage) Order, 2014 requires registration of all marriages solemnised in Delhi, regardless of religion. In Rehan Elahi v Government of NCT of Delhi, the Delhi High Court confirmed that the Order applies to Christian and Muslim marriages. Registration under the Order does not affect the validity of the church marriage; it records it.

Documents

For each spouse: identity proof, date-of-birth proof (such as a baptism certificate is not usually enough on its own; use a birth certificate, Class 10 certificate or passport), address proof, a notarised affidavit on e-stamp paper and photographs.

Joint: the church marriage certificate (or an extract from the church register), photos of the ceremony and the e-District acknowledgement and fee receipt.

Witnesses: two adults with identity and Delhi address proof.

Step by step

  1. Collect the church certificate after the wedding, checking names against your identity documents.
  2. Prepare affidavits and notarise them.
  3. Apply on e-District under the 2014 Order, choosing the district of the church or of either spouse’s residence.
  4. Pay ₹200, plus any late fee.
  5. Attend the appointment with two witnesses.
  6. Download the certificate.

Fees and deadlines

ItemAmount
Registration under the 2014 Order₹200
Days 61–120 after the wedding+₹500
After 120 daysPenalty up to ₹1,000, may be remitted

Inter-faith couples

If one partner is Christian and the other is not, a church wedding may or may not be possible, depending on the church’s rules and the 1872 Act. The Special Marriage Act is always available, with no conversion required: give notice, wait 30 days, and marry before the SDM with three witnesses. Many couples then hold a church blessing. See inter-religion marriage in Delhi.

Practical tips

  • Ask the church early how long it takes to issue the marriage certificate; some issue it on the day, others later.
  • Check spellings on the church certificate against passports before it is issued.
  • Baptismal names: if a spouse uses a baptismal name that differs from their official documents, add a one-name affidavit.
  • Keep the church certificate safe; it remains important evidence, including for any future church-related matters.

Which district to apply in

You can apply to the SDM of the district where the church is, or where either spouse lives. Many central Delhi churches sit in New Delhi or Central Delhi districts, but couples often find it more convenient to register where they live, especially if their witnesses are local. Since Delhi’s districts were reorganised on 1 January 2026, check the district e-District shows for your address. See marriage registration in New Delhi district.

What the officer checks

At the appointment, the SDM confirms that both spouses are present, checks the originals, compares the church certificate with your identity documents and confirms the details with your witnesses. If the church certificate is unclear or incomplete, the officer may ask for an extract from the church register or for the officiating minister’s details. Asking the church for a clear, complete certificate in advance avoids this.

Using the certificate afterwards

The government certificate is the document to use for:

  • adding a spouse’s name to a passport;
  • updating bank and insurance records;
  • spouse or dependent visas, with apostille or attestation;
  • property, pension and inheritance matters.

Keep the church certificate with it. Together, they give a complete record of both the religious and civil sides of your marriage.

Common mistakes

  1. Treating the church certificate as the only record needed.
  2. Baptismal names that differ from Aadhaar or passport names.
  3. Using a baptism certificate as the only age proof.
  4. Missing the 60-day window and paying the late fee unnecessarily.
  5. Inter-faith couples not considering the Special Marriage Act.

Worked example: cathedral wedding

Joseph and Anita marry at a cathedral in New Delhi. The church issues its certificate the following week. They apply under the 2014 Order in New Delhi district, upload the church certificate and photos, and attend the appointment with two friends as witnesses.

Worked example: inter-faith couple

Rachel (Christian) and Aman (Hindu) marry under the Special Marriage Act in South Delhi, then hold a blessing service at Rachel’s church. Their legal marriage is the Special Marriage Act marriage, recorded by the SDM.

Worked example: old church marriage

Thomas and Mary married at a Delhi church in 1990 and never registered with the government. For a pension nomination, they register under the 2014 Order with an extract from the church register and request remission of the late penalty.

Key terms explained
