Central Delhi is where a great many Delhi weddings happen: banquet halls in Karol Bagh, community halls in Rajinder Nagar and Patel Nagar, and the Arya Samaj mandirs that host simple ceremonies every week. If you married here, or one of you lives here, this guide explains how marriage registration works in Central Delhi district today, including the changes that came with Delhi’s district reorganisation on 1 January 2026.
Central Delhi after the 2026 reorganisation
Delhi’s revenue districts were reorganised from 11 to 13 with effect from 1 January 2026. Shahdara district was dissolved, and three new districts were created: Old Delhi, Central North and Outer North. Sub-divisions increased from 33 to 39.
Central Delhi now has two sub-divisions:
| Sub-division | Areas typically associated with it |
|---|---|
| Karol Bagh | Karol Bagh, Rajinder Nagar, Old Rajinder Nagar, nearby localities |
| Patel Nagar | East and West Patel Nagar, Ranjit Nagar, nearby localities |
Some areas that older guides list under Central Delhi, such as parts of Chandni Chowk, Sadar Bazar and the walled city, now fall in the new Old Delhi district. See marriage registration in Old Delhi. The exact boundary for your address is shown by e-District when you enter your locality, so always go by what the portal displays.
Which office should you apply to?
You can usually apply to the SDM office that covers either:
- the place where your marriage was solemnised, for example a Karol Bagh banquet hall; or
- the place where either spouse lives, shown by address proof.
If you married in Central Delhi but live in Dwarka, you may be able to choose between Central and South West. Pick the office whose slots and location suit you and your witnesses.
Which law applies?
| Your situation | Route |
|---|---|
| Hindu, Sikh, Jain or Buddhist couple with a religious ceremony | Hindu Marriage Act registration |
| Any couple married in Delhi, any religion | Delhi Compulsory Registration of Marriage Order, 2014 |
| Inter-faith couple, or couple wanting a civil marriage | Special Marriage Act (court marriage) |
| Couple married abroad or with a foreign national | See our NRI and foreign national guides |

Arya Samaj weddings in Central Delhi
Central Delhi has several Arya Samaj mandirs, and many couples, including inter-caste couples and those wanting a simple ceremony, marry there. Two points matter:
- An Arya Samaj certificate records that a Vedic ceremony took place. It is not a government marriage certificate.
- You still need to register the marriage with the SDM, usually under the Hindu Marriage Act, using the Arya Samaj certificate and photos as proof of the ceremony.
If one of you is not Hindu, Sikh, Jain or Buddhist, an Arya Samaj ceremony may not be the right route. See Arya Samaj marriage certificate validity.
Court marriage in Central Delhi
For a court marriage under the Special Marriage Act, at least one partner must have lived in the district for 30 days before giving notice. The notice is displayed for 30 days for objections, and you marry before the marriage officer with three witnesses after that. See court marriage in Delhi.
Practical tips for Central Delhi
- Travel: Karol Bagh and nearby areas are well served by the Blue Line metro. Plan for traffic and parking around market areas, especially on weekends and during the festive season.
- Witnesses: relatives from elsewhere in Delhi are fine as witnesses; they do not need Central Delhi addresses.
- Wedding season: banquet halls in Karol Bagh and Patel Nagar are busiest from November to February, and so are registration slots. Apply soon after your wedding.
- Old documents: if your address proof shows “Central Delhi” but your locality has since moved to Old Delhi district, apply to the district e-District shows for the locality.
What to bring to the Central Delhi appointment
- Originals and two self-attested copies of identity, age and address proof for both spouses
- Both notarised affidavits on e-stamp paper (originals)
- Priest’s or Arya Samaj certificate, ceremony photos and invitation card
- Passport-size photographs of both spouses
- e-District acknowledgement and fee receipt
- Two witnesses, each with original identity and Delhi address proof and copies
Arrive a little before your slot. The officer checks originals against uploads, confirms identities and may ask a few simple questions about the wedding.
Worked example: banquet hall wedding
Ritu and Saurabh, both Hindu, marry at a banquet hall in Karol Bagh. Ritu lives in Rajouri Garden and Saurabh in Noida. They choose to register in Central Delhi, where the marriage took place. They upload the pandit’s certificate, photos and card, attend the Karol Bagh SDM appointment with Ritu’s brother and a family friend as witnesses, and download the certificate soon after.
Worked example: Arya Samaj wedding
Neeraj and Kavita, an inter-caste couple, marry at an Arya Samaj mandir in Central Delhi with four friends present. They use the mandir certificate as proof of the ceremony and register under the Hindu Marriage Act at the SDM office for the sub-division, with two of those friends as witnesses.
Mistakes we see in Central Delhi files
- Selecting Central district for a walled-city address that now falls in Old Delhi district.
- Using an Arya Samaj certificate with names spelt differently from Aadhaar.
- Witnesses arriving without original address proof.
