Marriage Certificate for a UAE Family Visa: Attestation Steps
To sponsor a spouse for a UAE residence visa, you generally need an attested marriage certificate. For a Delhi certificate, the chain is usually: state-level authentication, MEA attestation through the outsourced agency, attestation by the UAE Embassy in New Delhi, and then attestation by the UAE's Ministry of Foreign Affairs after arrival. An apostille alone is generally not enough for the UAE.

- Step 4
- UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in the UAE

- Two to four weeks or more
The UAE is home to millions of Indians, and one of the first things many of them do after marrying in Delhi is sponsor their spouse for a residence visa. The marriage certificate is central to that process, and the UAE is strict about its authentication. Unlike countries in the Apostille Convention, the UAE has generally required a full attestation chain. This guide walks you through it for a Delhi certificate.
This is general information. UAE requirements are set by UAE authorities and can change; check the official UAE government portal and the authority handling your visa.
Why attestation, not apostille
The Apostille Convention lets member countries accept a single apostille. The UAE has generally not accepted apostilles on Indian documents for visa purposes, requiring instead that the document be verified step by step by Indian authorities and then by UAE authorities. If you apostille your certificate by mistake, you will still need the attestation chain. See attestation vs apostille.
The attestation chain for a Delhi certificate
| Step | Who | Where |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | State-level authentication | Designated authority for Delhi documents |
| 2 | MEA attestation | Through MEA’s authorised outsourced agency |
| 3 | UAE Embassy attestation | UAE Embassy in New Delhi, or its authorised channel |
| 4 | UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs | In the UAE, at service centres or online channels |
Each step verifies the signature and seal of the step before it, so the order cannot be changed.
Before you start: get the certificate right
- Names must match both passports exactly, because the UAE visa system compares them.
- The certificate must be the government registration certificate from the SDM in Delhi, not a religious certificate alone.
- Check details such as dates and places, because errors mean starting again.
If you need the certificate quickly, Delhi’s Tatkal option can deliver it in about a day. See Tatkal marriage registration.
Step-by-step
1. State authentication
Submit the original certificate to the designated authority for Delhi documents for authentication of the issuing officer’s signature.
2. MEA attestation
Deposit the authenticated certificate with MEA’s authorised outsourced service provider, with a photocopy and a copy of the applicant’s passport. MEA normal attestation is free; the agency charges ₹90 per document plus ₹3 per page.
3. UAE Embassy attestation
Submit the MEA-attested certificate for UAE Embassy attestation in New Delhi, following the embassy’s current submission method and paying its fee.
4. MOFA attestation in the UAE
After arrival, complete attestation by the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Only then is the certificate ready for the residence visa application.
Timelines
Allow at least two to four weeks for the Indian and embassy steps, plus time in the UAE for MOFA. If you are planning a move, start the chain as soon as the certificate is issued.
Arabic translation
Some UAE authorities, particularly courts and certain government departments, may ask for a legal Arabic translation of the attested certificate. Visa processing may not always require it, but check with the authority handling your application.
What else the UAE family visa usually needs
The attested marriage certificate is one item in the sponsorship file. Sponsors commonly also need:
- the sponsor’s passport, residence visa and Emirates ID;
- the spouse’s passport and photographs;
- proof of the sponsor’s salary or income meeting the current threshold;
- a tenancy contract and, in some emirates, registration of the tenancy;
- medical fitness tests and Emirates ID registration for the spouse after entry.
Requirements and thresholds differ between emirates and change over time, so check the current rules for your emirate.
For Muslim couples: nikahnama and registration
If you married by nikah in Delhi, register the marriage with the SDM under the Delhi 2014 Order and attest the government certificate. Some UAE authorities may also look at the nikahnama, so keep it, with a translation, alongside the attested certificate. See Muslim marriage registration in Delhi.
If you are already in the UAE
If you are in the UAE and the certificate is in Delhi, a family member can usually handle the Indian steps and the embassy step with your authorisation and passport copies, then courier the certificate to you for MOFA attestation. Keep tracking numbers and receipts for every stage.
Common mistakes
- Getting an apostille instead of attestation.
- Skipping state authentication.
- Submitting a religious certificate instead of the government certificate.
- Names that differ from passports.
- Forgetting MOFA attestation in the UAE.
- Using unauthorised agents who cannot deposit with MEA.
Checklist
- Delhi government marriage certificate, checked against passports
- State authentication completed
- MEA attestation through the outsourced agency
- UAE Embassy attestation in New Delhi
- MOFA attestation in the UAE
- Arabic translation, if requested
Worked example: sponsor in Dubai
Faraz works in Dubai and married Alina in Delhi in a nikah ceremony. They registered the marriage under the Delhi 2014 Order, then completed state authentication, MEA attestation and UAE Embassy attestation over three weeks while Faraz was back in Dubai. Alina carried the certificate to Dubai, where Faraz completed MOFA attestation and applied for her residence visa.
Worked example: wrong process
Ritu had her certificate apostilled, then learned that her husband’s employer in Abu Dhabi needed an attested certificate. She restarted with the attestation chain, losing two weeks. Checking the destination’s rules first would have avoided this.
A timeline that works
| When | What |
|---|---|
| Week 0 | Marriage registered in Delhi; certificate checked |
| Week 1 | State authentication |
| Week 1–2 | MEA attestation through the outsourced agency |
| Week 2–4 | UAE Embassy attestation in New Delhi |
| On arrival | MOFA attestation, then the residence visa application |
Start the chain the day the certificate is issued, and do not book a one-way move until at least the embassy step is complete.
Why the order matters
Each authority in the chain verifies only the signature of the one before it. The UAE Embassy, for example, checks MEA’s attestation, not the SDM’s signature. If any step is skipped or done out of order, the next authority cannot verify it and will reject the document. That is why agencies insist on the sequence, and why a certificate with an error must be corrected and the whole chain restarted.
Key terms explained
- Attestation: step-by-step verification of a document by successive authorities.
- MEA: India’s Ministry of External Affairs.
- UAE Embassy attestation: verification by the UAE’s mission in India.
- MOFA: the UAE’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which completes the chain in the UAE.
One-line takeaway
For the UAE, follow the attestation chain (state, MEA, UAE Embassy, MOFA) on a correct government certificate; an apostille alone generally will not do.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need an attested marriage certificate for a UAE family visa?
Generally yes. UAE authorities usually require the marriage certificate to be attested through the full chain to sponsor a spouse.
Is an apostille accepted in the UAE?
For Indian documents, the UAE has generally required embassy attestation rather than apostille. Check current rules before starting.
What is the attestation order?
State authentication, MEA attestation, UAE Embassy in New Delhi, then the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the UAE.
Can I complete MOFA attestation in India?
The final MOFA step is done in the UAE, in person or through authorised channels there.
How long does attestation take?
Plan for two to four weeks or more, depending on each authority and courier.
Can an agent do the attestation for me?
Yes, many agencies handle the chain. Only MEA's authorised outsourced provider can deposit with MEA, so check credentials.
Do I need an Arabic translation?
Some UAE authorities or courts may ask for a legal Arabic translation. Check with the authority that will use the certificate.
Can a wife sponsor her husband in the UAE?
UAE rules allow women to sponsor family members if they meet the conditions. The attested marriage certificate is still required.
Is the attestation chain different for Hindu and Muslim marriages?
No. The chain applies to the government marriage certificate regardless of religion.
Can I attest a downloaded e-District certificate?
Ask the authenticating authority which form it accepts. Some steps may require the certificate in a specific form or a certified copy.
Does the attestation expire?
Attestations do not usually expire, but some authorities prefer recent documents. Check if your certificate was attested long ago.
Can I use the same attested certificate for another Gulf country?
No. Each country's embassy attests for use in that country. A UAE-attested certificate is not automatically valid in Saudi Arabia or Qatar.
Should I keep copies at each stage?
Yes. Scan the certificate after each attestation stamp, so you have proof of progress if the original is delayed in courier.
