Is Same-Day Marriage Registration Possible in Delhi?
Same-day marriage registration in Delhi is sometimes possible under Tatkal for a marriage that has already taken place, when documents are complete, witnesses attend and the office can schedule you quickly, but it cannot be guaranteed. Plan for one to three working days. Same-day court marriage under the Special Marriage Act is not possible because of the 30-day notice.
- Same-day registration
- Sometimes possible under Tatkal; not guaranteed
- Realistic plan
- 1–3 working days under Tatkal
- Court marriage
- Never same day: 30-day notice required
- What helps most
- Complete documents, notarised affidavits, witnesses on standby
- What hurts most
- Mismatched documents, missing originals, peak-season workload
“Can we get our marriage certificate today?” is a question we hear from couples with a flight tomorrow, a visa interview next week or a family emergency. Delhi’s Tatkal facility exists for exactly these cases, and sometimes it delivers a certificate on the day you apply. But same-day registration depends on things outside your control, so it is never something to promise or to plan an international flight around. This guide explains when same-day registration is possible, what makes it more likely, and how to plan realistically.
First, a clear distinction
- Registration of a marriage that has already taken place can sometimes be completed on the same day under Tatkal.
- Court marriage under the Special Marriage Act can never be same-day, because the law requires a 30-day notice before the marriage. See same-day court marriage: why it is a myth.
Everything below is about registration.
What Tatkal provides
Tatkal, created by Order 10 of the Delhi (Compulsory Registration of Marriage) Order, 2014, is an optional priority facility for urgent cases, on payment of an additional fee. It prioritises your application and appointment. Published guidance describes Tatkal as taking about one to three working days. In some cases, offices schedule and complete Tatkal registrations on the day of application or the next working day.
What determines whether it happens the same day
| Factor | Helps same-day | Hurts same-day |
|---|---|---|
| Documents | Complete, consistent, originals at hand | Mismatched names or dates, missing proofs |
| Affidavits | Notarised and ready to hand in | Not yet notarised, or errors in content |
| Witnesses | Both available and at the office early | One unavailable or without originals |
| Proof of marriage | Priest’s certificate, photos, card ready | Proof still to be collected |
| Office workload | Quiet day | Peak wedding season, holidays nearby |
| Time of application | Early in the working day | Late afternoon |
| Jurisdiction | Clearly the right district | Address proof in another district |
You control most of the first five. You do not control the office’s workload or the marriage officer’s schedule.
How to maximise your chances
- Prepare before the wedding. Gather documents, draft affidavits and brief witnesses in advance.
- Notarise affidavits early on the day you apply, or the day before if the wedding is complete.
- Apply early in the working day on e-District with Tatkal selected.
- Go to the SDM office promptly with original affidavits and all originals.
- Keep both witnesses with you, with original identity and address proof.
- Be flexible. If the office offers the next day, take it.
Why no one should guarantee same-day registration
Any honest professional will tell you that same-day completion is possible but not guaranteed. The marriage officer’s availability, the number of other urgent cases that day and any question about your documents can push completion to the next working day or later. Be wary of agents who promise guaranteed same-day certificates, especially for large cash sums. There is no paid shortcut beyond the official Tatkal fee. See marriage registration agents: charges and red flags.
Realistic planning
If your deadline matters, plan for:
- Tatkal registration: one to three working days after applying.
- A buffer: at least one or two extra working days.
- Apostille, if needed: a separate process after the certificate is issued.
If your plan only works if registration finishes the same day, it is too tight. Move the flight or appointment if you can, or use alternatives such as Annexure J for adding a spouse’s name to a passport. See urgent marriage certificate for a passport.
Same-day registration on the wedding day itself
Some couples ask whether they can register on the wedding day. In principle registration can follow the ceremony immediately, but practically:
- affidavits must state the date and place of a marriage that has happened, so they are notarised after the ceremony;
- the priest’s certificate is often issued at or after the ceremony;
- witnesses and both spouses are busy with the wedding.
The day after the wedding is usually the realistic earliest.
Worked example: completed the same day
Ritika and Varun married on Sunday. On Monday at 9 am, they notarised affidavits, applied for Tatkal on e-District at 10 am, and reached the SDM office by 11:30 am with two witnesses and all originals. It was a quiet week outside wedding season. They were seen in the afternoon and the certificate was approved by evening.
Worked example: completed the next day
Sana and Arif married in December. They applied for Tatkal the next morning with everything ready, but the office had many urgent cases. They were given an appointment for the following day, completed registration then, and downloaded the certificate that evening.
Alternatives when same-day is essential
If your situation truly cannot wait even a day or two, look at what you actually need the certificate for, because there may be another way to meet the immediate requirement:
- Adding a spouse’s name to an Indian passport: Passport Seva accepts a joint affidavit with photograph (Annexure J) as an alternative to a marriage certificate for this purpose.
- Employer or insurer requirements: some will accept proof of application, the priest’s certificate and affidavits temporarily, with the registered certificate to follow. Ask them in writing.
- Visa applications: a few systems let you upload documents after submission; most do not. Ask the visa authority before assuming.
- Travel by an NRI spouse: if the spouse must leave before registration is complete, the couple will need to return together later, because both must appear in person. Some couples change the flight by a day or two rather than face another trip.
None of these replaces registration, which Delhi law still expects within 60 days of the wedding. They simply buy time.
What a realistic urgent plan looks like
| Day | Action |
|---|---|
| Before the wedding | Documents checked; affidavit drafts ready; witnesses briefed; e-District account created |
| Day 0 (wedding) | Priest’s certificate collected; ceremony photographed |
| Day 1, morning | Affidavits notarised; Tatkal application filed and paid |
| Day 1, late morning | Original affidavits and couple with witnesses at the SDM office |
| Day 1 or 2 | Registration completed; certificate downloaded after approval |
| Day 2 onwards | Apostille started if the certificate will be used abroad |
Common reasons same-day attempts fail
- An affidavit has a wrong date or is not notarised.
- A witness has a photocopy instead of the original ID.
- The bride’s address proof is in another district.
- A previously married spouse forgot the divorce decree.
- The couple arrived late in the day.
Key terms explained
- Tatkal: priority registration for an additional fee under Order 10 of the Delhi 2014 Order.
- Marriage officer: the SDM or authorised officer who registers the marriage.
- Original affidavits: the notarised paper affidavits, which must reach the office for online applications.
- Working day: a day the government office is open, excluding Sundays and public holidays.

Frequently asked questions
Can we apply and get the certificate on the same day?
Occasionally, under Tatkal, if the office can see you that day and everything is in order. Most Tatkal registrations complete within one to three working days.
Can we register on our wedding day?
Registration follows the wedding, so in theory you could apply the same day, but in practice affidavits, the priest's certificate and witnesses make the next day more realistic.
Do agents who promise same-day certificates have a special route?
No. There is no unofficial fast lane. Anyone offering a certificate without an SDM appointment is not offering a lawful registration.
Is same-day registration possible under the normal route?
Rarely, because normal appointments depend on availability. Tatkal is the route designed for urgency.
What if the office cannot complete it the same day?
Your application stays pending. Ask when you can return and keep your witnesses available.
Does same-day registration need different documents?
No. The documents are the same as for any registration.
Is there a same-day option for court marriage?
No. The Special Marriage Act requires a 30-day notice before solemnisation.
Should we bring a reserve witness for a same-day attempt?
Yes, if you can. A missing witness is one of the most common reasons an urgent appointment cannot be completed.
Which day of the week is best to try?
Any working day can work. Avoid days just before public holidays and Mondays after long weekends, when offices tend to be busier.
Can we get the certificate apostilled the same day too?
No. The apostille is a separate process through state authentication and the Ministry of External Affairs' agencies, with its own timeline.
