Urgent Marriage Certificate for a Passport Application

Quick answer

For an Indian passport, a registered marriage certificate is the standard proof for adding a spouse's name or changing your surname after marriage. To add a spouse's name, Passport Seva also accepts a joint affidavit with photograph (Annexure J) instead of a certificate. If you need the certificate itself quickly, register under Tatkal in Delhi, which usually takes one to three working days.

A passport is often the first document couples need to update after marriage, and often the most urgent: an upcoming trip, a spouse visa, or a job abroad. The question is whether you need a registered marriage certificate first, and if so, how quickly you can get one. This guide explains what Passport Seva asks for, when a joint affidavit can be used instead, and how to get a certificate fast in Delhi if you need one.

When a passport needs proof of marriage

There are two common passport changes after marriage:

  1. Adding your spouse’s name to your passport (shown in the personal particulars).
  2. Changing your surname, usually the bride taking her husband’s surname, although either spouse may change name.

Both are done through a passport reissue application on Passport Seva, supported by proof of marriage.

The standard proof: a marriage certificate

A marriage certificate issued by the Registrar of Marriages or marriage officer is the standard document Passport Seva accepts as proof of marriage. In Delhi, this is the certificate issued after registration under the Hindu Marriage Act, the Delhi 2014 Order or the Special Marriage Act.

The alternative for adding a spouse’s name: Annexure J

Passport Seva also accepts a joint affidavit by husband and wife with a joint photograph, known as Annexure J, as proof of marriage for adding a spouse’s name. This change, reported widely in 2025, helps couples who have not yet registered their marriage, particularly those abroad.

Annexure J is useful when:

  • you need to add a spouse’s name quickly and have not yet registered;
  • registration would take longer than your travel plans allow.

But keep in mind:

  • Annexure J is for Indian passport purposes; foreign visa authorities usually want a registered, apostilled certificate;
  • Delhi law still expects marriages solemnised in Delhi to be registered within 60 days;
  • for a surname change, check the current document list on Passport Seva.

Getting a certificate fast in Delhi

If you need the certificate itself, for example for a surname change, a visa or other purposes, Tatkal registration is the fastest route for marriages that have already taken place:

  1. Prepare identity, age and address proofs for both spouses.
  2. Notarise affidavits.
  3. Collect proof of the wedding: priest’s certificate, photographs, invitation card.
  4. Line up two witnesses with Delhi address proof.
  5. Apply on e-District with the Tatkal option.
  6. Attend the prioritised appointment.
  7. Download the certificate, usually within one to three working days of applying.

Then the passport

With the certificate (or Annexure J for adding a spouse’s name):

  1. Apply for reissue of passport on Passport Seva, selecting the changes you need.
  2. Upload or carry the supporting documents listed by the document advisor.
  3. Book an appointment at a Passport Seva Kendra.
  4. Choose Tatkal passport if you need it urgently; this is a separate service with its own fee.

Which route fits your deadline?

Your needFastest route
Add spouse’s name, no certificate yetAnnexure J with passport reissue
Change surnameRegister marriage (Tatkal if urgent), then passport reissue
Spouse visa abroadRegister marriage (Tatkal), apostille, then visa; update passport as needed
Both spouse name and surnameRegister marriage (Tatkal if urgent), then passport reissue

Keeping names consistent

Before you register, decide whether either spouse will change name, and use your current names exactly as in your passports in the marriage application. The certificate records your names at registration. If you then change surname, the passport will show the new name, and the certificate will show the old one alongside your spouse’s name, which is normal and explained by the marriage itself. Problems arise only when the old names are spelt inconsistently.

Documents to carry to the Passport Seva Kendra

For a reissue after marriage, applicants typically carry:

  • the current passport (original and self-attested copy of the first and last pages);
  • proof of marriage: the registered marriage certificate, or Annexure J where accepted for adding a spouse’s name;
  • proof of present address, if it has changed after marriage;
  • for a surname change, any additional document the document advisor lists for your case;
  • the appointment confirmation and fee receipt.

The Passport Seva document advisor shows the exact list for your application type. Check it online before booking, because the list depends on whether you are changing name, address, spouse details or all three.

Should you change your passport name at all?

Changing your surname is a personal choice, not a legal requirement. Some couples, especially those with careers, degrees or professional registrations in their existing names, keep their names and simply add the spouse’s name to the passport. Others change surname everywhere. If you do change it, plan the order: passport first if you travel often, then PAN, Aadhaar and bank accounts. See keeping your maiden name after marriage.

Common mistakes

  • Waiting for a certificate when Annexure J would have been enough for adding a spouse’s name.
  • Using Annexure J and then discovering a foreign visa needs a registered certificate.
  • Names on the certificate spelt differently from the passport.
  • Booking a passport appointment before the certificate is issued.
  • Assuming a temple or Arya Samaj certificate is enough.

Worked example: adding a spouse’s name before a trip

Ankita and Saurabh married in Delhi two weeks ago and fly to Dubai next month for Saurabh’s job. Ankita wants Saurabh’s name in her passport. They sign Annexure J with a joint photograph, apply for reissue, and register their marriage under the normal route within 60 days. Later, for Ankita’s dependent visa in the UAE, they get the registered certificate attested.

Worked example: surname change before a visa

Divya plans to take her husband’s surname and needs her passport updated before a Canadian visa application. They register under Tatkal, download the certificate three days later, and Divya applies for a passport reissue with the certificate. Once the new passport arrives, she uses it, with the apostilled certificate, for the visa.

Passports for NRIs abroad

If you live abroad, passport reissue after marriage is handled by the Indian embassy or consulate, often through an outsourced service provider. Missions abroad have also implemented Annexure J for adding a spouse’s name without a marriage certificate. For a surname change or for visa purposes in your country of residence, a registered and apostilled certificate is usually still needed, so many NRI couples register in India during the wedding visit.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a marriage certificate to add my spouse's name to my passport?

Not always. Passport Seva accepts a joint affidavit with a photograph of both spouses (Annexure J) as an alternative for adding a spouse's name. A marriage certificate remains the standard document.

Do I need a marriage certificate to change my surname in my passport?

A marriage certificate is the usual supporting document for a surname change after marriage. Check Passport Seva's document advisor for the current list.

Is Annexure J accepted abroad?

Annexure J is for Indian passport purposes. Foreign visa authorities usually want a registered, apostilled marriage certificate.

Can I apply for the passport before the certificate is issued?

Apply when you have the required document. If you use Annexure J for adding a spouse's name, you do not need to wait for the certificate.

How quickly can I get a certificate in Delhi?

With Tatkal registration, usually within one to three working days of applying, if documents and witnesses are ready.

Should my passport name match the marriage certificate?

Yes, ideally. Consistent names across passport and certificate avoid questions at visa and immigration stages.

Is Tatkal passport the same as Tatkal marriage registration?

No. They are separate services run by different authorities, each with its own fees and procedures.

Is a temple certificate accepted by Passport Seva?

A registered marriage certificate is the standard proof. For adding a spouse's name, Annexure J is an accepted alternative. A temple certificate on its own is not the usual proof.

Can both spouses update passports at the same time?

Yes. Each spouse applies separately with their own documents.
