North East Delhi is one of the most densely populated parts of the city, with large Hindu and Muslim communities living side by side in areas such as Yamuna Vihar, Gokal Puri, Karawal Nagar and Shahdara. Since 1 January 2026 it also includes Shahdara as a sub-division, after the old Shahdara district was dissolved. That change has left many couples unsure which office to approach. This guide clears that up and explains how to register Hindu, Muslim and other marriages in North East Delhi.

North East Delhi after the 2026 reorganisation

Delhi’s revenue districts were reorganised from 11 to 13 with effect from 1 January 2026. Shahdara district was dissolved, three new districts (Old Delhi, Central North and Outer North) were created, and the number of sub-divisions rose from 33 to 39. The biggest change for this district was the dissolution of Shahdara district, with Shahdara becoming one of North East Delhi’s sub-divisions; some former Shahdara-district localities may now fall in East Delhi instead.

North East Delhi now has 4 sub-divisions:

Sub-divisionCovers
Karawal NagarThe Karawal Nagar area and surrounding localities
Gokal PuriThe Gokal Puri area and surrounding localities
Yamuna ViharThe Yamuna Vihar area and surrounding localities
ShahdaraThe Shahdara area and surrounding localities

Sub-division boundaries do not always follow the colony names people use every day. Localities near the old Shahdara district boundary deserve particular care. Always confirm the jurisdiction e-District shows for your exact locality before you apply.

Which office should you apply to?

You can usually apply to the SDM office that covers either the place where your marriage was solemnised or the place where either spouse lives, shown by address proof. If your documents say “Shahdara district”, ignore the district name and check where e-District places your locality today: it may be the Shahdara sub-division of North East Delhi, or a sub-division of East Delhi.

Step by step in North East Delhi

  1. Check documents for both spouses: identity, date-of-birth and address proof, with names and dates matching across all of them.
  2. Collect proof of the ceremony: the priest’s certificate or the nikahnama, photographs of the ceremony, and the invitation card.
  3. Prepare two affidavits on e-stamp paper and have them notarised. The Karkardooma court complex has notaries and e-stamp vendors nearby.
  4. Apply on e-District, selecting North East Delhi district and the sub-division shown for your locality, and pay the fee.
  5. Book an appointment that both spouses and both witnesses can definitely attend.
  6. Deliver original affidavits to the SDM office if your sub-division asks for them for online applications.
  7. Attend with originals, both spouses and two witnesses.
  8. Download the certificate from e-District after approval, and check every detail.

Registering a nikah in North East Delhi

Muslim marriages solemnised in Delhi can be registered under the Delhi (Compulsory Registration of Marriage) Order, 2014, which applies to marriages of all religions. The Delhi High Court has confirmed that the Order covers Muslim and Christian marriages too. Use the nikahnama as proof of the ceremony, with photographs, and make sure the names and date match your identity documents and affidavits. If the nikahnama is in Urdu, a translation may help. See Muslim marriage registration in Delhi.

Shahdara: then and now

Before 1 January 2026From 1 January 2026
Shahdara was a separate districtShahdara is a sub-division of North East Delhi
Applications went to Shahdara district officesApplications go to the sub-division e-District shows
Documents printed “Shahdara district”Still valid; jurisdiction follows locality

If you applied before the change and your application is still pending, track it on e-District and contact the office shown there.

Court marriage in North East Delhi

For a court marriage under the Special Marriage Act, at least one partner must have lived in the district for 30 days before giving notice. The notice is displayed for 30 days, during which objections can be raised. If none is upheld, you marry before the marriage officer with three witnesses and receive the certificate. See court marriage in Delhi.

Practical tips for North East Delhi

  • Check jurisdiction carefully if you live near the old Shahdara district boundary.
  • Narrow lanes and congestion: allow extra travel time, and agree a meeting point with witnesses near the office.
  • Joint families: many couples live with parents. Your own Aadhaar at the family address is good address proof.
  • Translations: if any document, such as a nikahnama, is not in English or Hindi, carry a translation.

What to bring on the day

  • Originals and two self-attested copies of identity, age and address proof for both spouses
  • Both notarised affidavits on e-stamp paper
  • Proof of the ceremony and passport-size photographs
  • The e-District acknowledgement and fee receipt
  • Two witnesses, each with original identity and Delhi address proof and copies

At the appointment, the officer checks originals against your uploads, confirms that both spouses and both witnesses are present, and may ask a few simple questions about the wedding. If the file is complete, approval often follows on the day or shortly after.

After you receive the certificate

Download the certificate from e-District and read every line before you file it away. Names, dates of birth, the date and place of marriage and the parents’ names must match your documents exactly; a small error now becomes a real problem later at a passport office, a bank or an embassy. Save the PDF in two places, such as your email and a cloud drive. If the certificate is going abroad, begin state authentication and apostille straight away. If either of you is changing your surname, the certificate is the anchor document for updating your passport, Aadhaar, PAN and bank records. See name change after marriage in India.

Mistakes we see in North East Delhi files

  • Selecting a dissolved “Shahdara district” or the wrong district from habit.
  • A nikahnama with spellings that differ from Aadhaar, with no one-name affidavit.
  • Wedding date on the card differing from the date on the nikahnama or priest’s certificate.
  • Witnesses forgetting original address proof.

Worked example: nikah in Gokal Puri

Imran and Sana marry by nikah in Gokal Puri. They apply under the Delhi 2014 Order, uploading the nikahnama, photos and their Aadhaar cards. They attend the appointment at the sub-division e-District shows, with Sana’s brother and a neighbour as witnesses.

Worked example: old Shahdara district documents

Rakesh’s voter ID shows “Shahdara district”. When he and Meena apply in 2026, e-District places their locality in the Shahdara sub-division of North East Delhi. They apply there without changing any documents.

Key terms explained

  • Sub-division: the unit within a district headed by a Sub-Divisional Magistrate, who registers marriages.
  • SDM: the officer who acts as registrar under the Hindu Marriage Act and as marriage officer under the Special Marriage Act.
  • Jurisdiction: the authority of a particular office to register your marriage.
  • Reorganisation: the redrawing of Delhi’s districts from 11 to 13, effective 1 January 2026.
