Changing Your Name in Bank Accounts After Marriage

Quick answer

To change your name in a bank account after marriage, submit a name change request with updated KYC at your branch or through the bank's online service, attaching the marriage certificate and your updated Aadhaar and PAN. Banks then update the account, issue a new cheque book and debit card in the new name, and update linked FDs and lockers. Review nominations and consider adding your spouse.

Your bank account is where your salary arrives, your EMIs leave and your savings sit. If your name on the account does not match your Aadhaar and PAN after marriage, you may face problems with KYC, investments, loans and even receiving payments. Updating it is routine for banks and takes little time if you have the right documents.

Before you go to the bank

  1. Register your marriage and get the certificate.
  2. Update Aadhaar with your new name.
  3. Update PAN to match.
  4. List every relationship you have with the bank: savings and current accounts, FDs and RDs, lockers, loans, credit cards, demat or investment accounts linked through the bank.

How to update

At the branch

  1. Fill the bank’s name change or KYC update form.
  2. Submit the documents and originals for verification.
  3. Sign the new signature card, if your signature is changing.
  4. Ask for a new cheque book and debit card in the new name.
  5. Ask the bank to update linked products, such as FDs and lockers.

Online

Many banks allow KYC updates and some name changes through internet banking, mobile apps or video KYC. You upload the marriage certificate and updated documents, and the bank verifies them. Some banks still require a branch visit for a name change.

Your signature

If you are changing how you sign, the bank needs your new specimen signature. Until then, cheques signed with your new signature may be returned. Update your signature card when you update your name.

Cheques, cards and payments

  • Cheques: cheques issued from your new cheque book will be in the new name. Old cheques already given out are usually honoured from the same account; check your bank’s policy.
  • Cards: debit and credit cards are reissued. Update the card details on subscriptions and payment apps.
  • Incoming payments: tell your employer and anyone who pays you to use your new name. Payments to the same account number generally still credit.
  • UPI: the name shown on UPI may change once the bank updates its records.

Fixed deposits, lockers and loans

ProductWhat to update
FDs and RDsName on receipts and records; nominations
LockersName in locker agreement; nominee or joint hirer
Home or personal loansBorrower name; co-borrower if your spouse joins
Credit cardsCard reissue in the new name

Nominations and joint accounts

Marriage is a natural moment to review nominations. You can:

  • add your spouse as nominee on accounts, FDs and lockers;
  • open a joint account with your spouse, choosing the mode of operation (for example, “either or survivor”);
  • keep separate accounts if you prefer; marriage does not require any change.

Investments linked to the bank

Demat accounts, mutual fund folios and insurance policies linked to your bank must also be updated, usually through their own KYC processes. Update them soon after the bank, using the same documents.

Accounts at several banks

Many people hold accounts at more than one bank, plus a salary account, a PPF or post office account and perhaps an NRE or NRO account. Make a list before you start and work through it in one week, using the same documents and the same new name. Keep a simple table:

Bank or productRequest dateReference numberCompleted
Salary account
Second savings account
FDs
Locker
PPF or post office
Credit cards

NRI accounts

If you are an NRI, or are becoming one after marriage, the bank must also update your residential status. Moving abroad after marriage often means converting resident accounts to NRO accounts and opening an NRE account. Tell the bank about your move, provide overseas address proof, and update your name at the same time.

When your spouse joins a loan

If you and your spouse take a joint home loan, the bank will check both names across the loan application, property documents, PAN and Aadhaar. Updating your name before the loan application avoids delays in sanction and disbursement. If the property is already in your maiden name, carry the marriage certificate to link the names.

Keeping a paper trail

Ask for written acknowledgement of each request, keep copies of the forms you submit, and save the bank’s confirmation emails or SMS. If any later process questions the change, you can show when and how it was made.

Common mistakes

  1. Changing the bank name before Aadhaar and PAN.
  2. Forgetting to update the signature card.
  3. Updating the savings account but not FDs, lockers or loans.
  4. Not telling the employer, causing salary credit queries.
  5. Leaving old cards active on subscriptions.

Worked example: full update

Tanya Bhatt becomes Tanya Rao after marriage. After updating Aadhaar and PAN, she visits her branch with the marriage certificate, updates KYC and her signature card, receives a new cheque book and debit card, updates her FD receipts and adds her husband as nominee.

Worked example: keeping the name

Ritu keeps her maiden name but moves to a new home. She updates only her address through online KYC and adds her husband as nominee on her accounts.

Checklist

  • Marriage certificate
  • Aadhaar and PAN updated
  • Name change request and KYC update submitted
  • New specimen signature recorded
  • New cheque book and cards received; old cards destroyed
  • FDs, lockers, loans and credit cards updated
  • Nominations reviewed
  • Employer and payers informed

Worked example: NRI conversion and name change

Megha marries and moves to London. Before leaving, she visits her bank with the marriage certificate and updated Aadhaar and PAN, changes her surname, converts her savings account to an NRO account, opens an NRE account, and adds her husband as nominee on both.

Key terms explained

  • KYC: “know your customer”, the identity verification banks perform.
  • Specimen signature: the signature the bank uses to verify cheques and instructions.
  • Nominee: the person who receives the account balance on the holder’s death.
  • Either or survivor: a joint account mode where either holder can operate it, and the survivor continues it.

One-line takeaway

Update Aadhaar and PAN first, then your bank KYC, signature, cards and linked products in one go, and review nominations.

Frequently asked questions

How do I change my surname in my bank account after marriage?

Submit a name change request with updated KYC documents: the marriage certificate, updated Aadhaar and PAN.

Does my account number change?

No. The account number stays the same.

Do I need to visit the branch?

Many banks offer online or video KYC updates; some name changes still need a branch visit. Check with your bank.

What happens to cheques in my old name?

Cheques already issued in your old name are generally honoured if the account is the same. Ask your bank about its policy.

Do I need a new debit card?

Banks usually reissue cards in the new name. Destroy old cards once new ones are active.

What about fixed deposits and lockers?

Ask the bank to update FD receipts and locker records to your new name and to review nominations.

Should I add my spouse as nominee?

Many people do after marriage. Nominations can be updated at any time.

Can I open a joint account with my spouse?

Yes. Joint accounts are common after marriage; choose the mode of operation, such as either or survivor.

What about UPI and payment apps?

Your UPI ID is linked to the account; the name shown may update after the bank updates its records.

What if I keep my maiden name?

No name change is needed. You may still update your address and nominations.

Is there a fee to change my name in a bank account?

Most banks do not charge for a name change, though reissued cards or cheque books may carry standard charges.

Do I need my spouse to come to the bank?

Not for your own name change. For a joint account or adding a nominee, follow the bank's requirements.

Will my credit score be affected by a name change?

Your credit history follows your PAN. Make sure lenders update your name so reports match.

Can I open a joint account before changing my name?

Yes. You can open it in your current name and update later, though doing the name change first avoids a second update.

Do I need to update my name in my PPF account?

Yes, with your bank or post office, using the same documents.
